Having read the recommendations and advice given in this forum, I've seen some brilliant life-affirming foreign films over the last year or so. My favourites have been films such as: Hidden, The Lives of Others, Run Lola Run, Pans Labyrinth, Tsotsi, Kung Fu Hustle, Hero, Old Boy, plus tons of the asian horror films.

I'm looking to expand my collection with both recent and older classics, so any other recommendations for foreign-language films? (subtitled preferably as I can't stand dubbing)

The Orphanage
Shutter [Japan]
Ils
A Snake of June
Tetsuo
Uzumaki
Sorum

Get all of those. Most people will recommend you rubbish like Ringu or Dark Water. The above films are all very high quality.

Without doubt, two french films,

La Haine

Irreversible.

Atleast one of them films will change your outlook on either racism or women.

La Haine is quite overrated. But yes, Irreversible is excellent. I Stand Alone is also worth it if you can get hold of it.

Overrated by who exactly?.. Me personally I think it was well ahead of its time dealing with racism, especially the racism that seems to happen in France.

La Cité des enfants perdus.

Great french film, with Ron Perlman and Dominique Pinon.

Tetsuo the Ironman
Banlieue 13
Versus
Ong-Bak

All great foreign films :)

Caché
Kwaidan
La Reine Margot
Les Visiteurs (not to be confused with the 2001 US version)
Farinelli
Rashômon
Kagemusha
Tengoku to jigoku
Ran
Das Boot
Nochnoi Dozor

Caché

Les Visiteurs (not to be confused with the 2001 US version)
No, not Les Visiteurs. Awful film, absolutely terrible. I appreciate that some people do like it but personally I can't stand it.

Caché, however, was enjoyable - even if typically French (took forever to get going, bit too "arthouse" in places, etc...). I watched it after seeing it recommended on these very forums, and was pleasantly surprised by it.

Not seen La Reine Margot so will check that one out.

Oh, and I can recommend Luc Besson's Nikita. Fantastic film.

Banlieue 13

Yes. Not the greatest film in the World but it packs a lot into its relatively short runtime and considering the budget it is superb.

Sticking with a French theme Rififi, I bought it on a whim from a member here and it is fantastic. Hell there's even a scene where for almost 30 minutes no one speaks and it still conveys more than most Hollywood blockbusters do in their entire running time.

Hardboiled
The Killer
A better tomorrow

All good choices, I'd add Fearless, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House Of Flying Daggers while you are there.

I don't know if you'd count them as foreign films but Once Were Warriors, Romper Stomper and Chopper from the Antipodes are all worth a watch.

Finally I'd suggest Shichinin no samurai(Seven Samurai), Muban mentions Rashomon which is also by Kurosawa, I think this is the better film and the one that The Magnificent Seven was based on.
