Recommended older games available cheaply

I just realised nobody has mentioned Mafia! Such a great game, could be picked up for next to nothing, certainly worth a play through.

Yeah, definitely. From what I recall, you probably want a few lower power, higher fire rate cannons and then one or two big nasty ones.

I've got higher fire rate (8.33) big nasty ones. Big and nasty for level 6, anyway. I haven't gone for the really big and nasty ones with a slow fire rate (2.0), because I'm not that good a shot :) I've got a mix of types, too, to account for different types of shield. I like my hailstorm of energy bolts, but it really drains the batteries.

One thing that is missing is fleets. I want a fleet, or at least a freighter with fighter escorts. With my symbol emblazoned on them, of course :)

A much better sales database would be good, too. I want to be able to see prices for all goods at all places I've docked at, not just those I'm carrying and those sold at the place I'm docked at. I'm thinking of digging out my archaic laptop just to use it for a spreadsheet of prices.

There is also a set of superweapons hidden about the galaxy in asteroids etc. that do incredible amounts of damage. When I finished the game, I bought the heaviest fighter I could and mounted 'em all on.....one hit kills :D :)

Sweet. I've already started finding stuff off the beaten track. Nothing useful yet, just additional planets not connected to the high-speed trade lanes.

A lot of fun for £2.50.

Civ4: complete.
At various retailers for 10 € here.
Any strategy fan should have this.
Make sure to visit civfanatics for downloads, mods, journals, tips, guides, etc...
Many people also forget to play the scenario's provided with it: Civ4, Warlords and BTS have some very good mods and/or scenario's provided, especially BTS, some of em completely change the game into another.

Rome Total war gold edition is available for 6€-10 at most places here.
Medieval 2 Total war gold Is available for 10 or was it 15€ at a retailer here.

Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam (5€ last time I checked)are available cheap and worth it too definitely. Far Cry too.

Also I agree with the OP: Port Royale 2 is great, shame so little people know about it.

Sim city 4 is great, pop over to simtropolis and download away. Got over 2gb of mods for it now. Shame the engine makes really really poor use of modern hardware. When modded a lot, it sucks a really lot of cpu power but only uses one core ( crashes randomly when using 2), also it doesn't use any more available gpu power than say a geforce ti 4600. If the engine would use dual or all 4 cores, and properly make use of modern gpu power, I'd consider it one of the best games around. But the buggyness/slowness of the engine simply annoys too much.

Anachronox. Ancient and with one quest unplayable on a PC with a CPU runnig faster than about 166MHz. Who knows why they tied the quest timer into the CPU clock, but they did. You have to download a savegame from just after than quest (which is close to the beginning). It looks its age, but I like the story. You wouldn't pay good money for it, but it's worth a couple of quid. It's a Sci-fi RPG, single-player party type, in which combat is a combination of turn-based and realtime (each move takes a certain amount of time). I paid £2 for it, and it's worth that.

.

I set up a 98 box to play this and others, great game.

Red Alert - The original, works on Vista and is a right laugh, can be had for £3-4.
Can be had for free. EA released both the original C&C and Red Alert as freeware just before their respective third installments were released.

Edit: Woops, realised LinktoInsanity already said this. My bad.

Orange box was on offer for £5.66 a week or 2 ago. Bought it emmidiately !! Truly a bargain for such a brilliant collection of games :)
