recommended ram for bf2142

Only 1 drive, should I stick in another? But yeah, low fragmentation.

I upgraded to 1.5Gb BTW and it alleviated the problem somewhat.

If you have the means certainly put another drive in it can be used for backups and the pagefile, get the fatest & fastest drive you can afford, ideally a Raptor though a tad expensive

The Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200.10 is very quiet, efficient and has the Perpendicular bit storage thingyamaggy , and I'm sure there will be more suggestions here in a bit.

Both these drives on special prices this week only :) Save some squids

Seagate Barracudda 7200.10 hdd from Ocuk

Western Digital Raptor hdd from Ocuk

I have an old 40Gb Drive here, will that do, or does it need to be fast?

A faster drive would be nicer, but anything (well, almost anything) will be better than nothing. Put a 1GB page file on the new drive and keep a 1GB page file on the original, too. Then the operating system can chose which one to use depending on which drive is under more load.

Didn't know it would do that. I'll try it. I'm basically trying to tweak my system for bf2142 and loading times are a big issue for me.

Don't count on this making a whole load of difference, but if you have a spare hard drive you might as well use it!

This is similar to what i plan on doing. I'm getting a 150GB Raptor just for games, and a 36GB one for the OS installation and page files. This means that the hard drive which is used for loading games etc. doesn't have to deal with all of the paging operations, too. If you do try this with your 40GB hard drive, would you post your findings?

Heh, i've gotten used to playing BF2142 on my laptop with a 5400RPM drive, 1GB of RAM, an ancient Athlon 3400+ and an ATI 9600; i'd count yourself lucky, my friend. :p

What graphics settings u using with 1Gb? I'll do what was suggested and post my findings soon.

Have you considered just buying a fast 500Gb drive, I've heard raptors are expensive but perform silimilar to drives like the 7200.10?

I have everthing on the lowest setting apart from resolution, texture (on medium) and view distance (on 100%). I get around 25fps, with drops to around 16-17 at times. If i increase the graphics settings any further the fps drops become unbearable.

Well, since all i have is a laptop at the moment getting another hard drive isn't really an option. For the computer i'm getting in about a month or two, the reason i've opted for the more expensive Raptor drives over a standard 7200RPM drive is for a few reasions:
- In most cases the hard drive bottlenecks the whole system so getting a faster one should help reduce this.
- There are parts of the system which i'll rarely upgrade or swap out for new parts (when i get it all setup, that is); these include the monitor, PSU, case and hard drives. Therefore, i think it's worth spending the extra money on some fast hard drives when considering the amount of times they'll be recycled in future systems.
- Also, i'm a sucker for faster load times; albeit only a minimal improvement, getting into maps faster in games can give you a huge advantage in an online FPS, for example.
