Hi,

My first post in the photography thread. I've been browsing your photos silently till now:D

I've always enjoyed photography and recently bought a D3000 as an intro to the world of SLR.

Although I am slowly getting to grips with it and finally getting some shots which I really like I feel some expert advice would be great. Apart from the forums here and elsewhere are there any books that people have read that they would recommend?

Thanks in advance for the help.

PS I really like my low light stuff, so a specific book for that would be great.

Understanding exposure - Bryan Peterson.

I heard so many people recommend this book that I bought it....and I can see why. It's a very easy book to read and has made a massive difference to my understanding - I can even get reasonable results out of my Ixus 750 compact in "manual" mode in tricky situations now.

Bryan Peterson is a pretty good writer - have you seen some of his other books? I had a DVD a while back that gave some pretty good tips, plus he has a youtube channel :)

I will agree on this one, it's probably not the most in-depth book I've ever read/bought but he has a great way of conveying his thoughts across with useful reference images. Does seem more geared to film (originally published as such) but quite easily transferred for digital.
Maybe not as useful a book for anyone of an intermediate level but I think one of the best for starters in photography as it doesn't flood you with technical jargon. I finished reading it in a couple of hours, I also bought a couple of other books that I will have to look at the titles, they were much more detailed but at times hard going to read so I just read a chapter or two at a time.

I'm a bit sick at how much money he made on some of the shots though but all credit to him.

Ive got a couple of books by Scott Kelby.

They are not bad but his humour gets on my nerves a bit, He will spend an entire page trying to be witty, it gets in the way a little.

Im a complete beginner and I have ordered this as well, as it is the one book that everyone keeps referring to...
It arrives next week sometime so I will let you know what I think..

I think you'll enjoy it, it won't take you too long to read though but a good reference to go back to, I think as a beginner if I'd ordered it years ago I'd have probably saved myself a bit of heartache over the first year or so :)

I've just thumbed through my copy again and decided to re-read it, particularly the photo of his wife in a bikini!

I'm a perv so I'm surprised I didn't see that, damn me lending my copy to a friend :D

A book I'm reading at the moment is the Kodak complete book of photography (reprinted in 1989), and I'm finding it most interesting. Obviously it's film based but unlike most recent books it actually contains some very nice photography as well. I also like the way it also features the golden section rather than pushing the rule of thirds. Worth picking up if seen in a charity shop :)
