Reconfiguring wireless hub

I have just changed network providers but have just realised they are not providing a wireless hub. That being the case I will use my old one but have no idea how I go about reconfiguring it as I have always just 'plug n played' things in the past. Can anyone give me any pointers? Thanks

Start by telling us:-
  1. Old provider?
  2. New provider?
  3. Model of the existing router?
  4. Internet connection type?
  5. How you managed to choose a provider that doesn't at least offer to supply a router?
And then we might have a chance :)

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, termanology might not be up to speed. My new supplier provides a modem but it doesn't have wifi.

1. Virgin
2. John Lewis
3. Netgear SuperHub 2ac
4. Broadband - VIVID 50 fibre - 54Mbps

They might give me the option of buying my current router from them which may help a bit.

The basic package, the one I am going for, doesn't include WIFI, the next one up does.

I only really need it so I can stream Netflix down stairs. That said I had my eye on this. Would it be up to the job?

Virgin router won’t work with a an FTTC provider like John Lewis. What are john Lewis giving you - anything? Perhaps a BT Openreach modem as a minimum I would think?

That router has wireless. It's basic, but it has it.

BTW linking to OcUK's competitors breaks forum rules. The router you did link won't work with an ADSL connection as it only has an Ethernet WAN port. If you want to buy a router it needs to have an internal ADSL modem.

Opps sorry, had no idea. :s

Thanks again for the details, learning all the time! :)

Would it be enough the stream, say, Netflix to another room?

Yes. Most ISP provided routers are perfectly usable for general use but lack other options such as guest networks, QoS etc.
