Recording a phone conversation

You need the other persons consent for it to be admissible as evidence in court though IIRC.

Yup. Disclosure of the recording to a third party requires consent.

However, I *believe* (though would not claim it to be 100% fact), that the recording could be used as backup to contemporaneous notes; I could say to a court, for example, 'Here's my notes of what was said in the conversation, which I wrote down with the aid of a recording'. The opposition are able to dispute my recollection, but obviously there grounds for dispute are somewhat weaker - if they dispute what I say I alwys have the legal recourse to say 'Well, with your permission we'll play the tape and see...'

They then either have to give permission, or provide a convincing reason to wityhold that permission.

The OP said legalities aside...

why the hell are loads of people telling him what he already knows about it not being allowed unless they consent?

Erm...it *is* allowed, regardless of consent.

Perhaps you should check your facts before becoming indignant at people who know that they're not, well, factual?

I think you've missed the point completely Visage, i was saying he wanted to know how to record phonecalls and most people start talking about the legality (As with most other topics here... it straight away moves onto how something is illegal or will get you a "short holiday") !

Im being hypocritical since I haven't added anything relevant to this thread, but i needed to vent

Easiest and probably the 'dirtiest' way is to put the phone on loudspeaker with a microphone capturing the conversation.. microphone plugged in to the line in the pc of course

Alternatively use the phones' own sound recording feature (if it has one)
