Alright folks, my son has decided he wants to upload some (read lots) of game footage to his youtube channel

I'm looking for some advice on how to get the best quality footage for the least bit on performance of week long uploads

Spec wise he's gaming At 1080p with a 280x and a 2600k both with mild overclocks currently trying to use osb to record but I'm having problems with quality

I've tried varying bit rate but it doesn't seem to make any difference so I'm hoping so one can offer some advice here

Not bothered about file sizes for uploading unless we're talking a few gigs per 30 minute clip as we're on 80/20 fibre but I want to do this right for him and make sure the quLity is there

Any help?

Afterburner or open broadcaster software (obs) and use the save to file option.

Maybe try shadowplay from nvidia too

is he using an nvidia card which supports shadowplay? if so, it's by far the way to go imo, easy to setup - and the video is encoded in hardware on the graphics card with pretty much zero hit to performance

Hes using an AMD Card.

I had good success with using MSI afterburner. Might need to play around with the quality setting a bit. I used it to record some stuff with 6970's and then with my 290's and found it ran well on both.

Does he have an SSD to write the video files to? Can help a lot with maintaining performance.

Yes guys have a couple of ssds in that rig but have to say was trying to it last night using osb and it was giving massive performance hits as well as poor video
What sort of bit rate should I be aiming for for 1080p quality video?

As above, I've been using MSI AB for a few weeks now and at 1080p, I've had no performance issues with BF3, COH2 or Alien Isolation, but the video files are massive - 1 hour 20 mins on BF3 is about 25gb

MSI AB allows you to specify the video quality and the audio settings can be configured to record the game only and/or voice.

I was going to try out D3DGear (http://www.d3dgear.com/) as it looks decent. I have Afterburner installed but I've tried it and seem to have issues with quality. Although I've been setting the 'Frame Size' option to Full Frame rather than 16:9 1080p - would this make a big difference?

Snips, do you have any YT videos so we can see the quality you achieve please?

both fraps and dxtory have issues - either higher performance hit or with dxtory (for free version) a massive twirling logo.

Bandicam has almost zero performance hit, good quality videos and you have a very unobtrusive logo....however...the free version has 10 minute limit so you would have to splice together videos if you want longer. The paid version takes away the logo think its quite cheap.
As regarding quality...ive uploaded some videos of skyrim using bandicam no problem good quality..albeit at 1080p they were very large video sizes

Havent tried MSI afterburner.. I'm sure i tried OBS as well but didnt like it but cant remember why.

You could try raptr as well.
as I understand it, it's AMDs version of shadow play and has negligible impact on performance.
I game at 1080p and used it to record at 720p. I was impressed with the results, but it was only for 10-15 min sessions.

had a play with msi afterburner and whilst the video quality is good the files are huge

30 seconds of gameplay came in at over a gig, not ideal if we plan on doing 15-20 minute videos :(

and that was recording at 720p any suggestions?

Is the size an issue because of uploading or because or storing it?

When I was recording with AB, once I had finished I used Handbrake to reduce the file size, didnt really seem to effect the quality much either.

Both really

Even on fibre a gig of video at my current 720 setting takes a while

And I've found another prod. Afterburner doesn't work with minecraft doh
