Hi all,

Following from my Writing Music thread, I'm looking at recording riffs straight onto my PC - obviously using a mic really distorts it and makes it sound 'orrid!

I've got a Line 6 Spider II amp and have hooked it up to my PC's onboard soundcard. Is it worth buying a dedicated sound card to plug the amp into instead?

Also, what software would you recommend? I'd preferably like to be able to record layers, so I could record the rhythm guitar, then record the lead, and essentially drag and drop them into different layers and listen to them together.

Ta,

Sony's Sound Forge is pretty versatile for recording/sampling. Not sure on layers as I've never used them but its worth getting a copy.

p.s. I don't work for Sony

using a mic is the best way, you just have to have a good mic to start with! and then a good sound card for it to go into :)

for my recording when i can get the mic is going to be Amp (Vox AD120VT) > Mic (SM57) > Mixer (Behringer thing) > Audiophile 2469

Think I use M-Audio Fast Track which is USB with Jack/XLR inputs, mic my amp with a shure sm57 and use cubase to record stuff. Works for me.
