Only ever have to record my miles if I have to go in my own car, even then I just AA route plan and add a couple of miles as I usually get lost...a bit.
They're really strict at work, the have ISO standards or something. Everything is logged and by the end of that working week you've gotta have above 80% efficiency. It's important in my job as its used to calculate how much clients are charged for time spent on artwork etc. I've only been there 5 weeks now, it's crazily organised! So basically every time I do a job, I have to login to the web system, write down the time, move a T card, sign this, date that and then finally log it on another system. Oh, and only one file on your desk at a time. And trying not to forget to do any of that stuff for every job.
It's slightly relevant, cos the software I use allows you to assign a case and start a timer, plus has various 'standard' tasks such as taking/receiving phone calls so doubles up as a handy time stamped attendance note of the discussion
However, if I've been a bit slack, I tend to do as you and just look through my e-mails received and sent out, together with any notes (I have a scribble pad where if I'm writing down conversation notes or working I'll jot down the date and file I'm working on) which usually allows me to reconstruct the day pretty accurately, even a few weeks down the line.
