Hi, i have an X-FI Fatal1ty soundcard, i was wondering, downstairs my parents have this old Hi-Fi that plays Vinals, it did have speakers untill my dad cut the wires :\, anyway, how can i record them onto the pc using that front panel on the X-Fi?, the only output on this old Hi-Fi is headphone, so do i connect that to the computer or somthing?

Thanks
Willz

Basically yes. The problem with turntables (it's vinyl btw ;) ) is the line out from them is much lower than other components so you're actually better connecting it to a normal hi-fi amp then taking the output from that to the sound card.

A quick google should turn up some guides :)

My dad is doing exactly this at the moment as there's some stuff that's not available on CD but he has on vinyl.

You definately need to go through an amp first (or a phono preamp) as vinyl requires RAII compensation. Without it (it's a kind of filtering) you'll just get a nasty tinny recording. Unless your player has this built in and outputs a line signal (very unlikely).

Yeah, i've seen that. Its made by the same people who make my cheapy electric drum kit :D . Presumably a turntable with a preamplifier and USB interface built in, including software. Quite a neat solution, but a bit limited for use as anything else.

Anyhow, I just re-read your first post willhub, and you say it has a headphone output. This is in fact fine to use, the preamp will be located before this output. I take it it's a "big" headphone socket (6.35mm stereo jack)? You just need a 6.35mm stereo jack to 2xphono. As this is uncommon, you are likely to need a 3.5mm stereo jack to 2xphono cable with a 3.5mm-6.35mm adapter. Connect the 2xphono to the aux in on that front panel. This photo might help, I have lots of cables :)

The adapter? You shouldn't have any problem finding that, just a 3.5mm stereo to 6.35mm (1.4") stereo adapter. I can't say anywhere specific as the places that sell them tend to be competitors. A trip to a local electronics store or even the electronics part of a supermarket should uncover some, possibly titled as a headphone adapter.
