Is there any way to use file recovery software to scan a NAS drive?
(without taking the drive out of the enclosure)

I was migrating data over to a newer NAS solution but the next time I powered up the new system it didn't recognise any of the disks (open media vault) so ended up deleting the drives (was trying to remove the entries so I could remount the drives but I somehow completely deleted them)

stupidly I should have just reformated to ext4 and mounted the disk in a Linux VM to recover it but I have already formatted them as NTFS.... so I think I'm screwed there on the new disk so my only hope is to recover from the original NAS drive

is there any hope for me?

If they were part of some RAID (other than mirroring) it's going to be problematic to get any data out intact.
In that case some professional data recovery company would be the best hope.

Doing any writes to drive under recovery is the best way to make sure propability for recovering data decreases!
Likely destroying some data permanently...
