I loved this story on BBC today. In short, roman scrolls which had been unreadable, due to damage, are now giving up their secrets thanks to modern technology.

It's possible some very important lost works may become available to scholars. There's a long way to go, but this is awesome stuff.

I guess this could have implications for crime investigation/ intelligence gathering, too.

It is really cool stuff, really sad how many records have been lost but hopefully this tech can bring more back to life :)

Also, side note of interest, one of the guys in the team (Luke Farritor, mentioned in this article https://www.theguardian.com/science...ead-word-on-ancient-scroll-burned-by-vesuvius) has recently been outed as being part of the DOGE team :p

They've now managed to make out and translate the first few sentences.

We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinkin' of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy

This was last year, I guess it's nice of the BBC to keep up months later - the young man who made the breakthrough has also been in the news recently because of his new job (but that's perhaps a topic best left for SC).

It really is incredible though, potentially a lot of new info for historians to look into, all because someone put up some prize money and let some cracked ML enthusiasts try to solve the problem. :)
