Recurring numbers

There is no point in arguing against such pig headed 'logic'. Its quite clear he has only a loose grasp of the concepts he is trying to argue and clearly has made no effort to understand any of the information anyone has presented as, in his own words, if he understood it then it would disprove him. If he doesn't understand it then it isn't 'plain, sensible or logical'.

He requests the proof in simpleton form, and then when given to him in a way that an A-Level student can prove by themselves from the basic principles of summations he blindly refuses to accept the truth in the mathmatics.

If you discount all the mathmatical methods that can be used to prove 0.9r=1 then you cannot add, subtract, multiply, divide, integrate, diffentiate, sum, etc etc.

I specifically disagree with the assertion that you cannot mathmatically manipulate a recurring number.
I agree that infinity (hereby refered to as inf) cant really be manipulated
ie
inf+1 = inf
inf*2 = inf
etc

however the distinction between a number of infinite magnitude and a number of infinite prescision must be made.

One would agree that
0.3+1=1.3
and hence
0.9+1=1.9
so why not
0.9r+1=1.9r

In the end if someone does not want to belive something they will tell themselves whatever they need to to maintain their 'comfort' in understanding rather than being left with something they can't, or won't comprehend.
