Recycling crisp packets + other packaging

I don't eat crisps but I'm right in a city centre and the nearest drop off point for me is literally miles.

it would likely be a larger carbon footprint for me to go to the place than just sticking a packet in a normal bin

That's if it even gets recycled. People think they can use whatever because 'recycled' but the actual amount that gets recycled? Most is untraceable

yea and what doesn't get recycled is everywhere.

in almost every living organism on earth right? in every millimetre of the ocean, we probably even breathe in particles of plastics and I bet they rain from the sky.

plastics in disposable items should be totally killed off imo

I wouldn't be surprised it the whole thing ends up being worse than asbestos was and we're all dying of cancer because of plastics in the enviroment

They can usually go in the supermarket 'soft plastic' recycling bins, along with plastic bags, bread bags etc.

I normally just throw them in the bin as I only eat crisps when I'm out and about.

Yep, the soft plastic solution is less than ideal, as evidenced by the mewling from the OP, but is a nice option to have for those who it works for. It's better have the choice but not be able to use it 100% easily than to not have the choice at all, right?

e: 'mewling' not 'yewling' which was a word I apparently made up

First time I read about Terracycle was on one of the ferrero rocher boxes so have used it a few times when its been convenient. The problem is keeping all the stuff around for one trip. I think its processed differently to the usual recyclable items and may need sorting etc. hence cant go in your usual bin.

I looked at the terracycle schemes when the box of Ferrero rocher we had for Christmas said they could be dropped off at your nearest recycling point. Fantastic I thought. Checked out the map and the nearest one to me was a good 5 miles away - the next best bit is that there is someone collecting terracycle items within a mile of me, but they don't collect ferrero rocher boxes.

How farcical is this scheme. Surely it makes much more sense to have multiple collection points that can be used for any terracycle items, and then they get sorted out at a collection centre.

Which makes terracycle an absolute joke.

bring back Tudor pickled onion, doesn't have to be the same brand name just the flavour :P
I miss Tayto spicy Monster Munch, now called Mighty Munch. You only get them in Ireland or pay a premium online.

All the supermarkets in Melbourne have large red bins to put them in. It's called red-cycle. We just save all of our soft plastics (I don't eat crisps) in a carrier bag and dump them once a week when we do the click and collect. Couldn't be easier really. I think its a great initiative and I fully support it.

All comes back to money and selfishness.
Companies don’t want to make it easily recyclable because profits.
Councils don’t want to make it easier for you to recycle because budgets.
Government don’t want to enforce companies or raise budgets because taxes.

Whilst all three points might be true to some extent, the morality of recycling is really taking off regardless of what the government does or doesn't do. People are waking up and realising that our current way of life isn't sustainable.

Frankly i think it should be law that all large supermarkets have recycling bins for all types of recyclables, not just your typical paper and bottles which i'm 100% certain all get collected kerbside anyway.

Because they're processed differently.

I think most people would be more than happy to have their collected recycling pre-sorted so it doesn’t need to be done at the processing centre and more items can be collected at the same time.

Most councils prefer the quick and dirty method of chuck it all in the one bin and sort it out later.

They should have terracycle bins at supermarkets, or wherever, much like clothes or shoe bind all over the place.

I personally think that most plastic recycling is a complete waste of time and deflects from the fact that we just shouldn't have single use plastics at all. Plastics are a serious pollution. They have already worked their way in to the food chain with little-understood consequences and no amount of recycling will help that. Eventually any plastic produced will end up as pollution. And, as OP correctly points out, the energy wasted recycling it is usually more than the plastic is actually worth.
We really need to consider life without the current plastics ( perhaps we can invent better ones? ) but right now we urgently need to stop single use plastics. Not recycle them, just stop them altogether.
