Recycling

I recycle paper and glass, but that's because I only have bins to do those two. We have so much plastic packaging now it's ridiculous. I can't believe the amount that comes with food alone.

We should start stripping off the excess at the point of sale, ie leave it in Sainsburys and let them pay to deal with it. They are causing the problem at the end of the day. Hit them where it hurts.

The whole plastic shopping bag ban is a farce too. Now I have to BUY shopping bags AND rubbish bags instead of just re-using my shopping bags and my total plastic consumption has increased as a result. What a joke.

They do have to pay for it. The Packaging Waste Regulations mean that manufacturers and retailers are responsible for paying a cost towards the recycling of the materials. They have to buy notes from recyclers to say that they have accounted for a certain tonnage of waste.

PK!

I like how the council now make us use three seperate bins for our rubbish, and send round three different lorries to collect, that's really thinking about the environment.

They would have needed to send round 3 trucks anyway for your area, all they are doing is sending them out with larger routes before they head back to base ;) (so they might all do streets A B and C, but picking up just orange, black or green on any one street rather than picking up everything on a single street).

Recycling plastic is my biggest gripe. Everything else you can do from home. I do recycle plastics but its a pain in the arse talking it to the centre. I dont see any reason why cans, glass, plastic cant be put in the same bin, collected by the bin men and sorted at the recycling centre.

Our council changed contractor so we went from a tiny box for just glass, cans and newspaper to a full size wheelie bin that we can now put cardboard and plastic in. It's so much easier, as long as my housemates remember to put the bins out if I'm not there!

There's no recycling scheme where I leave so I still chuck everything away without any guilt ¬_¬

Yeah, not all councils do it yet.

I believe ours was a trial initially...And they're just seeing how it goes...Quite well apparently.

I live in a big block of flats too, not sure how it would work there. They would probably just have to put big boxes for glass and stuff next to where you throw rubbish down the hole.

Now, I dont go food shopping much, but are you saying that when you try and take your bags that you had from last weeks shop and use them again, they make you buy some more instead of using the ones you brought along?

If so, thats extreeeeeeeemly idiotic....

Just about to take delivery of two brand spanking new weelie bins here, one for recycling & 1 for general waste. It's about time too, they came up with the propsal 3 years ago! Up to now it's been 1 teeny box for everything. There is a change to the collections though - recycling only done on a two week basis. To do both every week would've seen a rise in council tax & this way there is a slight saving.

Since having a child I've noticed that we produce more rubbish that falls under the general waste category. Now we always seem to have 2 black bags whereas before it was always only 1. And that's taking into consideration that all our veg waste now goes into the compost & they now take more thing for recycling (tetra packs, plastic milk bottles, glass).

I agree with whoeve posted above though. Retailers & maufacturers need to do much more to reduce the amount of needless packaging.

shame bristol council doesn't recycle plastic

As others have said companys should get tax intensives if they reduce packaging and make it from only one material. Thus making it easier to recycle.

so theres no recycling facilities in your local area?

even though ours is collected i still take down our orange juice tetra packs to the local supermarket for recycling, as well as glass occasionally too.

Same number of lorries here. Appart from a seperate one once every 2 weeks for glass.

Black bin -general waste
Blue bin - plastic, paper, cans, cardboard etc..
Heavy Duty Bag - Glass

Alternating weeks.

we have a box for paper, cans and plastic and they must separate them at the recycling depot.
Same here.

Just put out the box with everything in it on a Thursday morning next to the black bag and that's it. Think with ours they separate the recycling when they stick it on the lorry so I try and keep the box as neat as possible to make it easier for them.

I dont mine recycling it's the anal bin men I cannot stand and the fines being issued for having your bin on the street on delivery day before a certain time. Or the fines for not having a lid thats fully closed.

I've had friends who cut the lawn once per week and put it in the wheely bin only for the bin man to say it's too heavy. A bin that his Mrs can easily put out. If they collected once per week we wouldn't have these problems.

We recently got a bin for plastics, we know have two wheely bins and two boxes. I do it all apart from food waste which I still chuck in the black bin.

This is why I'm glad we're not using wheely bins here. We put our black bags out loose (as many per house as we like generally speaking).
