Red arrow incident

Can't help but have a really bad feeling about this. What a terrible blow to the Reds this would be. You never imagine the last incident never mind another one.

I would guess that the previous incident could have happened to anyone in a single jet and had nothing to do with close formation flying (not that we know yet). This incident sounds like it was on the ground. Again this could happen to a single jet. On each case it was just unfortunate to be the red arrows. It could have happened to students in a single hawk.

Edit: beaten ^^

BBC reporting that the pilot is in a very serious condition. I'm afraid that I know what the headlines will be reading in a few hours time. I'm not sure of the % rate of survival but banging out on the ground is hugely risky isn't it?

If parked up I'd imagine it could just shoot you into any surrounding buildings or anything. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Lincolnshire Echo reporting that the pilot was killed.

Some nonsense on Twitter when things like this happen.

"Maybe this is the time that the RAF finally got rid of the T1s and only use T2s."

Reading elsewhere that the seats are zero rated so it's possible.

BBC showing photos of 4 jets and it looks like the front part of the canopy is broken on one. It looks like they weren't even moved off the apron. You'd never expect that to happen before you even move. Shocking.

More rumours that the pilot ejected but the parachute failed to open. Who knows.

Is the chute meant to open automatically or does pilot trigger it? I'm guessing it should be automatic.

Yeah it looks like our flights are grounded too. Ill find out more when I start work tonight, but obviously cant say anything I learn on here.

Terrible tragedy though, I work the line on Tornados and I see off jets daily, the idea of this happening on ground is quite shocking, If it was during a see off procedure the liney must be seriously traumatised :(

Must be nice working that close to Tonkas. What sort of things are you responsible for on the ground? I imagine this is sort of like the pushback guys in civil aviation that advise on ground equipment removal, doors and seals closed, then 2 good starts etc. Is it similar idea for military?
