The controversy over the holes in the rear floor of the Red Bull, which appeared during the Bahrain Grand Prix in a car which has gone on to win two of the last three races, has been resolved.

In essence, the FIA had originally accepted the concept from Red Bull as legal. But it was once implemented on the car and having heard representations from other teams about it, they’ve changed their minds and now say that the fact that there isn’t explicitly a rule banning the idea, doesn’t make it legal.

They now say it’s illegal, because it’s presence on the car must contravene other rules by association.

It sounds like Red Bull will lose the 0.3 seconds they closed up on the leading bunch for the next few races at least.
 
So can someone explain why they can't just saw into the side of their floor until the cut reaches their inboard hole? The cut line will be 0.05mm wide but would constitute a slot rather than their existing illegal hole.

I'm not a particular fan of RB but unless there's a massive issue that I'm missing with the above (there probably is :P), it seems like their solution wasn't exactly mind blowingly different to the other slot solutions like on the Sauber and Ferrari 3-slot systems so I doubt this system alone gave them the pace to win two of the last three races.
 
Basically everyone wants a consistent definition of what a hole is. RB's version is a hole but not in the same way...

Correct decision all round was taken as it keeps the wordings consistent but doesn't bore everyone changing results.
 
0.3 of a second, a number they cherry picked out of air to halp write the story. Without running again on the same track we will never know. The gaps have been all over the place this year so it will hard for anyone outside of Red Bull to know how much it's been really worth.

My guess is 0.3333333r which is atleast as accurate as everyone jumping on the .3 bandwagon ;)
 
Any team can still protest rb two results untill the last race and if it's a close WDC\WCC I think Mclaren or Ferrai will.
 
Would they drop points if such a situation arose? I thought it was a clarification on the rule that now made that particular area of the car illegal. Before the clarification the car was found legal multiple times, so why would they have the points taken away?

Because its the FIA and they really don't follow any sort of logic when applying laws.

same teams but why in some races can a top team be a second off the pace and other races half a second infront of everyone else?

same teams wouldnt be sauber and williams btw
 
The same time differences existed last year, but the field was more spread out.

Half a second last year was the difference between pole and 2nd. Half a second this year (ignoring Vettels stonker yesterday) is the difference between pole and not making Q3.

A closer field meaning that 99% is no longer good enough does not make the sport 'random', it makes it competitive.
 
so itds not random when a team can be miles ahead in quali and the weather changes and they are nowhere?

not random when merc / rbr / ferrari /mclaren / williams / sauber can be dominating one race and 10th place the next?

looking at the race results there isnt much of a pattern and its not because the cars are so close
 
Because the grid is so close, make an error with setup or tyre pressures and someone will punish you, make a small mistake in qual and you can be 17th instead of 7th or something.

Also with no real tyre concerns in Canada we have seen it still being very close, so much for it being down to tyres being nursed.....
