So everyone's raving about red dead redemption and I've just returned from 2 weeks touring Injun territory in the US of Eh and I'm feeling a really strong need to buy an Xbox to play this game.

Thing is.

I've been a first person PC gamer since Doom on a 3.1 machine and have never been near a console since the old megadrive days.

Guess the question is. Just how good is the controller on the Xbox?

Will I miss WSAD and the mouse?

Should I wait a year till it appears on the PC anyway?

Should I wait till the new 360 appears or snap up an arcade version with all the goodies currently being offered by our friends in the jungle/ rainforest?

Before I spend money and make a mistake?

?

sure have the best of both worlds.
doesn't sound like you have a money problem so why restrict yourself ?

personally i prefer the ps3 controller but thats just me :p
i think more find the 360 controller to be better

Go for it. Consoles are so cheap and last so long - 360 and ps3 expected to last another 3-4 years! - why not if you're into games?

Buy a 360 if you want it... it's not as though we'll label you a traitor and hunt you down or something.

If you like the games on a platform, buy it. It'll likely take you a while to get used to it, (the controller) but then it'll feel better after a while. I've got to say for FPS games, PC is still better, but some games feel better on controller.

3rd person games play better on a pad anyway. If you plan on keeping the PC and want a console just for extra games then get a ps3. Far more games that don't appear on PC.

Thanks for the replies

PS3 is way too expensive and I already have a decent HT Bluray set up so that's a nobrainer.

The 360 arcade is so cheap at the moment but it only has 512mb of memory. Will this be too much of a pain wrt to loading times / saving?

Should I wait till 16th July and get the new one?

Seriously doing my head in this.

If you have a gaming pc I would get a ps3 too many xbox games appear on pc for my liking.

Mind you the 360 can be had for as little as £100 these days but then you have to add for batteries for gamepads or charger and then there is xbox live £25-£30 a year then the overpriced hard drives it all adds up.

Not worth getting one for one game you'd get bored of RDR just like any game.

I had a 360 and barely ever used it played all the best games on my pc in more detail.

Dude. I have a gaming PC . I'm a died in the wool FPS gamer but i want to play red dead redemption - as cheaply as possible

just hold off the urge to buy it as much as possible, just be patient it'll release for pc then you can play it at a playable framerate (unless it's horribly optimised like gta4, lets hope they've learn't their lesson)

Thanks for that

I am now off to hopefully finish Sword Poker 2 on my Iphone - taken me 2 weeks on a trip to get near to the end but what a total blast of a game.

Gnight

Yeah RDR 'almost' tempted me to buy a xbox. If i had more money i probably would but i have decided to be wise. It looks really good though can't blame you for being tempted!

I got a Wii which tbh i've played some of the good games, mario galaxy, zelda, metroid prime etc but only use it for tiger woods now. I thought i would hate the xbox controlled but i got it for PC when i got dirt2. It's a really nice controller tbh.

Xbox 360 arcade is really cheap unless you want a harddrive. Wifi, play games online and don't want to buy batteries.

Played it on my brothers PS3, frankly its interesting, seriously, but its so freaking easy and thats down to it being on a console, theres no aiming, its just constantly tapping the lock on button then fire. In some situations thats invaluable, escort missions riding up an down hilly terraine. But in others, when you attack a town on foot, theres just no, difficulty to it. Ultimately the story is close to great, but a bit too daft, and while the set pieces are quite nicely setup, nice towns to fight in and so on, the fighting is FAR too easy to be considered fun. Thats with almost never using the dead aim/bullet time which makes it even more painfully easy, it just never crosses my mind to use it as its already painfully easy.

Its a good game, worth playing but I wouldn't have bought a console for it, its a serious let down for me if you've ever played a game that took any skill whatsoever.
