Red Dwarf is back

It's not as though Rob Grant is busy these days, is it?

He's taken to writing novels and doing stand up comedy.

I've been reading his novel 'Incompetence'. Funniest thing I've read in years and I find it unsurprising that Red Dwarf has never been consistently funny since he left.

If you've read Doug Naylor's 'The Last Human' and Rob Grant's 'Backwards' you'll see what I mean.

I don't mind seasons 7 and 8, not my favourites, but they're ok.

The specials however :(

Red dwarf 10 confirmed, contracts signed and filming starts December with transmission in autumn 2012.
Chris Barrie on was on the local radio.

Hopefully be better than the mini series.

I'll have to see it to believe it, this has been going on since DJ2009 when they first announce the new series :(

I love Red Dwarf, i really do but even the good series were incredibly ropey tbh. Very little of it actually makes any sense and it just becomes too much to ignore after a while.

I think it was fairly consistent all the way through actually. Series 8 wasn't that bad.

I do however wish they would just leave it now.

It was never really as good after series 6. They put too much effort into special effects and not enough effort into keeping it funny.

The Back to Earth special was just a big let down. And lets not even get started on the Red Dwarf movie that never was.

If it's the original 4 guys alone in space then I'm interested, it all started to go wrong imo when lots of extras (the full Red Dwarf crew etc) and Kachanski were involved in every episode.

Get back to basics imo, 4 guys alone on a ship with the occasional expedition.

1-6 amazing.

The rest was garbage, I barely watched it properly.

It thrived on being dodgy, rubbish production. Terrible special effects, a seemingly relaxed attitude to getting the "perfect" shot and generally not taking it all that serious. This worked so well, however they just can't pull this off any more for whatever reason. The easy banter, the cringeworthy jokes and the perfect relationship between the characters will never be recreated.

I would love this to be a great series again and perhaps a live audience will help, but I doubt it will be any good :(

Im compelled to comment as red dwarf was a big part of my life years ago! Nothing will ever top series 6 for me. The real nail in the coffin from my point of view was removing the live audience, replacing stuff with cgi and lobbing it on dave. Also what happend to the ark full of cats? I know one of them crashed into an asteroid but what about the second one? nothing has ever been mentioned about this ever since lister found out why he is their god. I would have rehashed this story for a new series, dam sight better than an old squid and ripping off bladerunner.

^ yeah, i would have loved the Cat homeworld to be a story , maybe it will be in the new series. It was certainly set up.

For me though, series 1 is the best by an absolute mile, then 2, then 6. Other than that they are all about the same. Rimmer in the early series was just brilliant but they kept finding ways to make him "real" if you know what i mean. It was much better when he was a soft light hologram who had no presence whatsoever.
