Red Dwarf is back

But it was also quite special when he got the holo hard light upgrade :) wanted too see that for so many years and finaly got it.

Obviously the Red dwarf we recently saw on our screens was a major let down in terms of jokes and comedy... it was missing everything that made it special.

If they are coming back with specials or another series id rather they just made a decent movie with scifi and comedy thrown in properly... and since were now looking at 4 guys in theres 50s-60s give them a wigg at least !

It's one of those programs that if it finished at season 6 everyone would want more (and demanded it at the time)....... so we got it and it wasn't good, at all. The last mini-series was nothing short of insulting to fans IMO. I would almost say they were trying to pander to US audiences with some of the jokes in series 7+

Some things should be left alone! Look at Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, Jeeves & Wooster - limited series and iconic British comedy.

It looks like a white hole.

Erm, I actually do want more episodes? Bring them on. The mini series wasn't that bad upon a re-watch, and despite the comedy not being quite nailed, it was ingenius in places.

I will also stand up for Season 7. It was brilliant, and it might be my favourite. The JFK episode was immense, the Ace Rimmer send off episode was immense, Ouroboros was immense (Lister is his own father, Kristine got shot in the leg), Nanobots rebuilt Red Dwarf. Time paradoxes and parallel universes galore. It also has the Rimmer Song in a later episode, and also Kryten ruins the Jane Austen holo-programme with a TANK.
Seriously, some AWESOME episodes/moments in there.

I also think that season 7 wasn't that bad. The last 2 episodes anyway. Plus probably my biggest LOL moment evr, Ace Rimmer on the Crocodile!!!. The JFK episode was just cringeworthy(though most eps are really)

I do love Red Dwarf, but the writing has always been absolutely terrible.I will reserve judgement, but won't be expecting anything brilliant

OMG, those special episodes were a DISGRACE.

Its hard to believe that they could make them so bad.

I think I may have to download the entire 7 series' and watch them all for the 5th time.

Red Dwarf was just the best thing ever. There was something about it that actually had you involved in the plausibility of the sci-fi.

Hard to explain for me, but I suppose I was quite young when it first aired.

I hate CG red dwarf.

It looks ********, and somehow the actors turned crap at the exact same point.

Cardboard spaceships exploding and edison light bulb propulsion systems f-t-w

So true.

There was something about the proper original set that actually seemed far more realistic....

Cant really explain it!

Ahhh Ace Rimmer. Chris Barrie did both his characters so so so well.

Massive respect for him in Red Dwarf, and even more respect for his cool discovery programs too!

other than the corrie street bit I liked the special, the blade runner hommage was particulary enjoyable

live studio audience could be all it takes to make it great again

Live studio audience indeed, it'd mean they can't use any of that awful CG from the special, that was the worst part for me.

Agreed.

Also, the static studio cams and terrible production made the originals the classics that they are. Tracking cams, CGI and proper lighting are what ruined the specials. When the show starts to take itself seriously is when it gets in trouble. The tacky sets, off lighting, bad scripts, dodgy performances, barely learnt lines (in the commentaries, they point out parts where they are literally reading from the script in the live shoot) somehow manages to form a cohesive functional whole.
