So, with evidence that Dani California had its introduction copied from that Tom Petty song, some people are rasing their eyebrows at the creativity of this band.

But I've just listened to another one of their songs, which is apparently new.

It's called "Tell Me Baby" and in my opinion it's pretty much the same as "Can't Stop" Not chord wise or anything, but the style, short fast lyrics etc
Made me think, come on guys, we've heard this all before, do something fresh.

I could just be talking ballwhacky, but have a listen.

they are carp now...

anytime i hear rhcp... i instantly say mike patton.. its like a reflex

maybe i shouldnt give my opinion on them as its infected with faith no more

lets just talk about FNM - it'll be a much more interesting thread!

full of fun and laughter! lol.

i like RHCP old stuff, but as you say, its all getting a bit samey now!

1 - I can't stand RHCP, probably the most overrated band in the world.

2 - I don't believe for one second they ripped Tom Petty off. The chances they even heard the Tom Petty record are remote. It is very hard to write something new and an A G D chord progression has been done a million times and is one of the most simplest rock n roll progressions.

Perhaps so now but not once upon a time. I still highly rate Blood Sugar Sex Magic - cracking album.
Babyshambles deserves the crown of most overrated band imo :)

It doesn't occur to you that the reason some of their stuff sounds the same to their older stuff is that it's because they're the same band? I mean come off it, they're going to have the same style. If you really want the band to suddenly sound totally unique from their older material, you'd need to throw a spanner in the works like a new guitarist for example.
I don't think I'm making much sense at the moment because I'm tired but "Tell Me Baby" sounds nothing like "Can't Stop".

I don't believe for one second that they've ripped off Tom Petty, I mean, why would they? They're perfectly able to produce their own material. I think people want it to be true on the large part. The truth probably is John or someone heard Tom Petty's song on day without realising it and subconciously began to tab it, if at all. It is impossible to not be influenced by other music. As for plagiarism within music, I think the only true form of plagiarism would be to cover another song, a similar riff or chord progression does not constitute plagiarism.

If anything, I think Tom Petty should be flattered.

didnt you post the exact same thing in the other chili thread? :p

what song is A G D?

Yeah, why somebody started another thread is beyond me.

Dani California is A G D and it is a very used rock n roll chord progression.
(of course you can substitute other chords eg B A E or D C G etc))

It's the same with most bands i think. The chilipeppers have been around for what.. 22 years since their first album? So theyre recent music is obviously gonna sound different because - like most bands - they've evolved with time. Maybe the songs sound samey because they're recent albums have done so well.. why not do more of the same?

It was a pretty big song, I remember it being played here on VH1 at the time, I suspect they'd have heard it some time though no way would they have intentionally copied it.

Personally i'm a big fan of the chilli's, i've actually enjoyed the more mellow sound of the last few albums, especially the 2nd disk of stadium arcadium, i think its a really well put together album, not many songs stand out but as a whole i'm enjoying every track, whereas the first cd i head straight to dani california and snow.

But yeah, i think the plaigarism thing has been covered in the other thread, its pretty much the intro of the song that sounds the same, on the clips they played dani california was cut off as soon as the beat changes as it would've pointed out the differences, i dont think anything will come of it.

Loads of bands are able to keep their own style without making songs that sound the same as their older ones. Like I said, the chords and stuff aren't really the same, but the way Can't Stop was sung and played had that quick paced on the button delivery of the lyrics. Nice style, but don't do it again, make a song that has their own style, but not something that we've heard before. Be creative, come up with new ideas to incorporate into that style, that's what their job is afterall :p

A G D for dani cali...

isnt there a Minor chord somewhere.. ive never tried to play it so i aint sure, but it sounds like there is a minor chord at the opening chord sequence

i dislike RHCP so much, the plethora of threads we have bashing them at the moment are starting to get too much. yeah, their songs sound a little similar to some others, but they're getting old, and really only exist to cash a cheque.

i say, stick in One Hot Minute and forget about anything else they've ever produced. It's the only way you'll ever be happy with what they've accomplished.

also, stop listening to the radio.

Acceptable?

y'know, there's no need to get your back up. you obviously agree with what i'd said, because that's the last instance you'd listen to the radio and presumably, the only times RHCP would ever grace your ears. so, essentially, you're moaning about what you heard on the radio, when you know that for the most part, the radio plays crap.

acceptable - yes
make sense - no
