As of steam selling this for 3.74 this weekend is it worth it?
im planning on buying it but ive never played anything of this series is it still an active multiplayer game?

It's pretty dire if you have experience of playing ro1, the first game was far superior back in the day. Dont bother now though as its pretty dead, although the mod darkest hour has a small dedicated following.

Stubborn Developers, nasty forum community, badly released, badly optimized(early release worse than the beta) and they were so far up their own back sides, they actually said that the first release there was nothing wrong with it and felt it was the players PC that was the issue.

Since the GOTY update a few months back, the game is excellent. It has a steep learning curve, excellent weapon mechanics and some fabulous maps. It lacks the polish of a lot of more modern shooters, but makes up for it with great gameplay, huge attention to detail, and a supportive developer base who remain very active within the community.

Well worth the very small asking price, but you need to put the effort in to reap the reward - it's not as run and gun as most other games, and if you run into the open without thinking, you will die very quickly.

However if you're after something different and don't mind sticking with it, you will not be disappointed.

Rubbish. The game had a very rocky launch, but its much more polished now, certainly a long way from "dire" RO2 in Classic mode is superior to RO1 in my opinion - it's just as fun, immersive and realistic, while incorporating nearly all of the new features of RO2, including much better weapon handling, bullet penetration, etc etc.

RO2 does suffer from a small community due to being somewhat of a niche genre, so I would encourage everyone I know to at least give it a try and see what they think. It's currently free this weekend, I'm not sure when that offer runs out, I imagine midnight.

Stubborn Developers

Apart from a few blunt responses from RammJeager, most of the development team seem fine to me.

nasty forum community,

...huh? Never seen any nastiness, the forum is full of mostly level headed and helpful people in my experience. Certainly a much more mature audience than a lot of other communities.

I'll give you that, the release was very rocky, but since the GOTY update the performance issues have vanished. The game is very stable and runs smoothly now.

and they were so far up their own back sides, they actually said that the first release there was nothing wrong with it and felt it was the players PC that was the issue.

At least they actually fixed the issues, and remain active within the community. They have done their best to please the community, even creating a whole new game mode to cater for the people who stamped their little feet and shouted "but it's not RO1, damnit!". I can't see many other developers who do that, and to be frank, given the huge level of whining and complaining that they get over some of the tiniest issues, I can half understand if they appear a little blunt sometimes.

I'm guessing that you tried RO2 while it was still having a lot of problems, got bored and gave up. As someone who has played the game almost non stop since it's very first mod release as a UT2k3 mod, I stuck with it, knowing the core game and development team to be sound. Seriously, at least give the game another try now. The GOTY update fixed so many problems. As an unscientific measure of how much it improved is that I was playing BF3 pretty much exclusively from release, while RO2 was unable to hold my attention for more than 30-60 minutes at a time due to the issues mentioned. Since the GOTY patch, I haven't even looked at BF3, and instead I spend hours on RO2, much as I used to with RO1.

It'd be overpriced if it was £0.01.

Big pile of steaming horse manure. I wish Steam would let me remove it from my games list as it's an insult just having it listed there.

Was in a terrible state at release, they only got it to where it should be one year after release.. which was too late, people had already moved on or given up.

I only picked it up a few months back and there were still enough servers to keep me going!

Problem with this game is the lack of variety in the servers. Its all realism or heavily moded. I hate realism and dont like mods so that me out.

But it could be a really good game if they had more server varieties.

Not sure what you mean - of course all the servers are playing realistic gametypes because that's what the game is comprised of. It's aimed at being a realistic FPS.

Have I misunderstood your point, because it seems like your complaint with the game is that the servers are playing the game :p

Wow never thought I'd hear a PC gamer say they don't like mods for me that's the greatest thing about PC gaming that & K&M controls, each to their own I suppose, but you really are missing out on some great gaming & it's free.

I bought it on release but my **** poor PC and unoptimised game engine meant I had a pretty patchy experience. Mate of mine who I told to pick up Arma 2 this weekend and who is a big FPS fan. Played at a fairly decent level of CS plus the top of the DOD scene when it was popular. He also plays Quake 3 still.

Anyway he tried the free weekend and says he has put in 27 hours between late Sat-Sun. Urging me to buy it not knowing that I already own it. Will need to re-install and see the changes for myself.
