Red Steel

I see a lot on here people comparing wii graphics to that of the N64, I think they need to go back and play their N64 games. Red steel is at worst a gamecube looking game, at best slightly better. For starters it has textures that you can make out.

I think people are having there memories spoilt by the 360 and PS3, they are such a big jump its hrad to rem just how 'bad' things once were.

This was one of the gifts I got for christmas.... according the wii messageboard I've played it for ~45mins.

Found a bug within that time too, after your first sword fight, I didn't switch back to the guns (didn't know I had to), and went into the next area and you've got the guys shooting you, and I couldn't do anything with the swords... so died, after it started again it just had the guy with the swords standing in front of me, couldn't do anything - none of the buttons worked apart from +. Happened each time I did restart from checkpoint... so had to quit and reload. Worked fine after that as I didn't die.

Can't really say whether I like it or not (after all I haven't played it for that long), I'm at the bit where you have to defend the suite so gf+dad can escape. So far for the most part (i.e. running around shooting, I probably would have preferred WSAD and a Mouse), Sword fighting so far seems ok (has really just been training so far - I hope), for the 2nd guy, I would have thought most people with a sword and gun would have destabilised the guy, then pulled their gun out and shot them (but maybe that's just me!).

The menu UI is god awful, never seen anything so entirely useless with the dragging the icons onto the clipboard thing, stupid.

The game is ok, is very dingy so its hard to see enemies, I just shoot back at muzzle flashes most of the time.

I'm not convinced by the controls so far, taking a lot of getting used to, and doesn't seem very accurate.

Weapon sounds are awesome! Game play seems very good, i reckon it would have been easier though if the cross hair was stuck to the middle of the screen.

I thought the same, then the Wiimote thing would just act like a mouse, I'm struggling to use it in its "aiming until you get to the outside of the screen when it starts moving the screen but while the screen is moving you can't aim for toffee fashion"

I had to lower mine to the lowest sensitivity to prevent me spinning wildly everywhere when trying to aim at people, was I the only person?

(It wouldn't surprise me, I use 2.5 in bf2).

Whoop

Ive just finished the Red Steel story but it still shows me at 82% completion, just wondering, what is it that Ive missed?

Overall I think the game was quite good, textures were dodgy in a few places but certainly not bad for a launch title, there's plenty more to be had from the hardware
Personally I didnt have any problems with the controls, got used to it straight away.

Overall I thought the game got sooo much better when you could use the slo-mo to disarm everyone, but why oh why cant you skip cutsceens in level replay mode, thats just cruel.

Well i hated it.

I hated it too, more than i've hated a game in ages. I could rant for hours about Red Steel, but will save us all the trouble and just point out that the controls are completely unintuitive - the exact opposite of what Nintendo wants to acheive with the Wii. The quickly thrown together fps in Monkey Ball plays better ;)

I loved it thought it was great fun. Had no problem with the controls got used to them nearly immediately and was easy to aim with aswell. Thought they were implemented really well. Sword fights in places get dull but shooting action was always fun for me :D

The same as Goldeneye and Timesplitters then? (albeit with the remote) Terrible method IMO :(

Im stuck in it at the mo, im on a level where theres a balcony im obviously suppoed to get onto which is above me, at the far end of the yard im in below the balcony theres a car with a crane above it you can activate, looks like a car engine swinging from it, i assume im meant to jump onto this to hop upto the balcony but i seem to keep falling through it.

Okay well Red Steel was the game I had on pre-order with my Wii and after seeing such varied reviews of it floating about the net I was a little dubious to how good it was going to be.

In fact after getting my hands on my Wii it was a good couple of days until I got round to trying it out, Wii Sports and Wii Play were keeping me busy and I had the feeling that I was going to be disappointed with it.

Anyway after loading it up the first thing I noticed were the terrible menu select screens, seemed to be making use of the Wii remote for the hell of it and that got me thinking that Red Steel was going to be all gimmick and no game.

But five minutes into the game I was completely loving it.

For those that are/were expecting a FPS like Half Life/Halo/Far Cry but with a fancy new control system then yes you may well be disappointed.

To me it’s more akin to arcade shooters like Time Crisis or Virtual Cop (which I’m a huge fan of) in that you move from scene to scene and in each one you have to kill off x amount of bad guys. But Red Steel has the added bonus over the light gun games in that you can actually interact with the environment, taking cover behind furniture or chasing the enemy around to get a better shot.

Those that are use to their 360 HD or PC games will agree the graphics are not cutting edge nor do I think it’s pushing the Wii’s hardware very far, but it does the job very well and when sat in the dark looking at it on a 42” screen it’s totally engrossing, making you feel you are in the middle of a gun fight.

The control system takes a little getting used to at first (and yes it feels very odd keeping your arm pointing at the screen all the time) but it’s very rewarding after you have cleaned up a room full of bad guys with your guns and then sliced the end of level boss up with your sword skills.

I’ve still got a fair way to go with this game before I complete it but I’m enjoying every minute so far. If this is what we get from a launch title I’m really looking forward to what the Wii will have to offer once more developed titles are released.

great game when u get used to the controls, only played for a few hours but loving it, the only thing stopping me form playing it is zelda

It took me a few days after xmas to open this game, after hearing the mixed reviews I didn't think I would like it. Never the less I opened it, thought I should at least give it a chance. I liked it.

Only took a few seconds to get used to the controls, though they are a bit clunky, but they work in my opinion.
Graphics aren't too bad at all, and the environments are quite destructable which I like seeing as I end up spraying my uzi everywhere and seeing things fly about the place :P

this game is one you definitely need to get used to the controls first then you will start to enjoy it more

Agreed. Movement with the analogue stick, a fixed aim (not the aiming at the edge of the screen we currently have) with no crosshair whe moving around, and a static aim with a crosshair when holding the aim button would be great - and imo far better than the method used in Red Steel.

there's a switch to swing the crane arm around, jump up some boxes i think onto the other balcony, then walk along the crane to reach the balcony
