So some of you may know that I was about to hit the button and get a pair of 7950's. I have just got a bit of extra spends to add to my budget so I was looking at maybe going for a pair of 7970's, 670's, 680's or possibly a single 690.

Now looking about the green side seem to always come out on top WRT FPS on BF3, I will playing this mostly, and on a single 24" at 1920x1080 so should I pay the premium for nvidia as they seem to be better or will an amd be there or there abouts.

Also what PSU will need for any of these options.

For bf3 on a single 1080p display, any of those cards in sli/xfire will be major overkill, (unless it's a 120Hz display). The amd offerings represent decent value for money, and with the latest driver release, a decent upgrade in performance.

AMD and Nvidia are pretty much equal at BF3. With current pricing, nvida simply can't be recommended by anyone remotely neutral.

My choice would be to stick with the 7950s as they will absolutely rape anything at 1080p (one would probably be plenty) and will do it for £80 cheaper than a 670 (for 2)

Yeah it is going to be 120Hz so will be going CF/SLI.

So there is no worth in going a bit above for 7970's and just stick with the 7950's

In that case, id be looking at the 7950's. I couldnt reccomend nvidia at present due to their crazily high prices, (and im an avid nv user). Psu wise, a good quality 750w unit should be enough to cover two cards and any cpu overclocking.

Just get some 7950's with good coolers if you are going to over clock in crossfire. Perhaps the HIS boost cards which exhaust out the back would be a good idea, perhaps gregster or someone with dual card experience can comment :)

I personally would go with Giga WF or MSI TF. Although they dump heat into the case, they're pretty quiet and efficient if you have good airflow

Happy days well that has freed up some spends to put else where then!

I was all set for the MSI twin fozr 3 but there seems to be quite a lot of issues cropping up lately with MSI.

Untill they sort themselves out, I would avoid MSI...So many bad reports :(

For xfire or sli, reference cooled cards are a better choice. Particularly if board spacing is tight. I had a pair of wf 460's in sli on an X58 rig, due to the cooler design and tight board slot spacing the temps were insane. It can be hard exhausting the heat that non ref cards dump into the case, and if airflow isnt good they can quickly increase overall system temps by a fair amount.

I thought that non ref case dumpers are best if you can get a slot's spacing between the cards and had good airflow.

Worse case temps, but much quieter

With the 460's in an asus P6 X58 DE, i had a very tight gap between both cards, temps hit 98-89c at stock speed in bf3, my overclocked reference cooled gtx 470's hit 75c max, board was an asus P6T Deluxe V2 which had slightly better spacing.

Shame too as the 460's when used individually were exceptionally quiet and cool running.

I'm confused, I though both the stock cooler and the WF cooler only took 2 slots, so how is it that the spacing look so different?
