Well, i have been offered voluntary redundancy in work. Don't know wether to take it? Thing is, they need an answer by 12 midday on Monday. The settlement is crap really (Been working there for 15 years and all they offer me is £5,000!!) but i have had a guts full working there. I am on the sick at the mo with bad Anxiety and Depression. I had 6 months off last year with it too!

I went back to work this week for 2 days but it really upset me! Had to go back to doc who signed me back on the sick.

Thing is, i also have a baby coming in October!! Going to ring Citizens Advice to see what benefits i would be entitled too to keep me going till i can find another job (Part time as i want to stay home to look after the baby as the wife wants to go back to work).

What a dilema! Leave my poxy job or what? Gee, life!
 
Finding another job with your sick record might be more than a little difficult.

It is also easier to get another job when you are already in one.

Have you applied for amny other jobs in the last 2 years?
 
I don't think you are entitled to the same benefits as if you are made redundant. If you have any redundancy insurance for your mortgage, car, credit card, etc, you may also find that these won't pay out....so do a bit of checking first.
 
do you already have children?
if your already off for depression then being a house husband might not make it any better. also, its not nice for a child to spend a lot of time in a stressfull place, they do notice it regardless of how well you try to hide it.

Well from the sounds of it you dont really go to work at that compnay anyway as your off sick all the time, also sounds to me like they are giving you a chance to leave on your own with some kind compensation rather than them giving you the kick as your never at work.

Also if the job is that bad that its making you ill then you should be thinking about whats more important.... your health or a job you hate.

Take the money in my opinion and use it to either get yourself sorted or go on a long holiday or something, get yourself on your feet and find yourself another job..... lets face it if your current one makes you feel THIS bad then I'm sure you cant really get a worse job?
 
I am not the only one that has been offered the Redundancy. It is across the board at work as contracts are changing so they are giving people the chance to go this way.

I don't have a mortgage so no need to worry about that (Finished it last year).

I am only interested in finding a Part-Time job anyway as i don't need to work full time. I will know more today after i have spoken to Citizens Advice.

Well if you have no big huge bills to pay then like I said originally, take the money and use it to sort yourself out and relax a little.... you can get a part time job easily, Tesco, B&Q etc etc. Easy jobs.... got to work..... do your job for a couple of hours..... go home with no worries.

If I were you mate I'd take the money... although £5000 does seem very poor for 15 years service, is that their final offer?

I have always worked so got to find out more info before i decide what to do, especially with a baby on the way in October!

I have always hated working in my present job but with a mortgage i had no choice but to stick it out. £5,000 is not a lot of money for 15 years work and it is a pathetic amount to live off. I may get 6 months of keep out of it (The wife works). I don't want to make a decision and then regret it afterwards.

All my family say to take it and run but i am not sure that is the right thing to do. Work can't fire me for being on the sick, the Union would stop that!! Thing is, even the thought of going back makes me feel sick etc!!
 
Yeah but that £5000 is not what you have to live off for the rest of your life.... you said you want a part time job, you could get one asap and not eat into the 5 large as much then.
 
True. I have thought of that. Its finding a part time job mate. Thing is, i have not looked 100% anyway.

Just so nervous about jacking in a job i have done for 15 years, even though i am not happy there. I have never taken any risks with moving jobs etc.
 
you shouldn't have a problem finding work, it depends on what you are prepared to do. if you don't mind temping there are always call centre jobs going, data entry - all that kind of stuff, plus retail. if you don't have to worry about the mortgage then you are in a good position :)

Quick answer, no messing.

Don't accept volunatary redundancy, you weren't expecting this as you didn't know what was round the corner, likewise you don't know when you're going to get another job and so you MUST prepare to be out of work for a length of time.

This country offers benefits if you've been forced out of work, if you take the voluntary redundancy, you can be waiting for anything between 12-26 weeks for ANY additional money to come from the government. If you're forced out, you can expect some money within 4 weeks (sooner if you act the second you leave your job).

Both my wife and I have been through voluntary redundancy. She refused it and was MADE redundant and received benefits within 2 week. I accepted it and whilst I was lucky to get another job within 6 weeks, during that time I received no benefits at all.

Stick with it, like I said, you didn't know it was coming, you don't know if something else can be offered yet (which legally they have to at least attempt to reposition you within the company).

Best of luck, I know how damn hard this can be.

I'm going to go against the grain here and suggest you take it, for several reasons.

1) The company certainly can fire you for being off sick, if you're proving to be no longer capable of the job, or even if the company sickness policy has been followed to the letter. Any settlement they offer you at this time is likely to be far worse than the redundancy package they've offered you now.

2) You clearly hate your job, that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just a statement. What's more, your feelings towards your job are effecting your health, which is far more important than anything else. You say yourself the thought of going back makes you feel sick, that's no way to live.

3) Voluntary reducancy looks better when applying for a new job than being sacked for endless sickness.

If it's not too much of a personal question, how much are your currently earning? That helps determine the likelihood of getting another equivilent job or whether you'll be looking at a pay cut, and how significant. It would also help put the redundancy payment in context.
 
Pay is approx £5.50 an hour! Rubbish i know but this is not london but wales!

I have to decide by monday. Just waiting for Citizens advice to open (10am) to get info on benefits etc.

Why rely on benefits? Why not just go and get another job?

Citizens advice are fantastic people and have helped me lots.... I'm sure you will feel better after speaking to them, let us know what they say :)
