Redundancy - info needed

Think about it this way. If his salary is significantly higher than yours but he can hand over the job to you and you can do it competently, you are in the running.

Thats the thing, its not. Mine is actually higher. If he gets the job then he will be doing far far too much work (and at a high technical level) for someone on his wage

If I get it then I would probably take a pay cut to his, which I would not be used to and get twice as much work too

My advice is to not take any holiday. The company will then pay you a days wages for each accrued day, and that is probably better than a few days wasted sitting at home!

Von Helmet raises a good point - you need to watch for them trying to do that. Many companies will try to claw back money that way, regardless of the legality. It's difficult and sometimes a big waste of time to try to get it back.
I thought they were entitled to do that.
If not, wish I'd known that in December when I was made redundant as I'd have taken a bundle knowing I wasn't going to accrue it! Mind you, they did pay me some days owed so it's not all bad.

I know how you feel mate.

At my last job where I was working as an IT Technician there was me who was there full time & also a guy who worked there only 2 days a week as he was still in college at the time. Then towards the end of the school term we were both told that due to the recession kicking in and it had affected the school's budgets & wages and basically they only had 1 position for the Technicians job. We both applied but sadly in the end he got the job because he had been working there longer than me and started 2 weeks before I arrived. :( What ****** me off was that the school still got me to apply for the job, even though they were going to give it to the other guy anyway because he had been working there longer.

Sucks big time I know, I would definately re-apply mate and I hope you get the position!

I know everyone is saying to apply for the position and whilst I do think its a good learning curve I dont think anything will come of it (apart from maybe losing a mate)

He is more experience
The company will be saving ~2k a month by employing him over me

Out of interest, I wonder what they would do if both of us didnt apply for it??

No idea. Normally they'd interview the 1 person and see if they were right for the job, and if not advertise again. But because there are redundancies I'm not sure if they're obliged to keep that person on even if they interview very badly.

You should apply for the job anyway. Losing a mate is a stupid excuse. Any experience you can get applying for jobs is fine.

If he asks about it be honest and say you're applying with every hope of getting the job, but you realise it's unlikely, however the practice will do you good and you never know.

I'm going to drop an email to the team manager tomorrow with a few points in.

I have not been at work for the past few days due to illness (first time in about 5 years)
