Refresh rate > resolution?

Currently using a 60hz 1920x1080 monitor & thinking its time for an upgrade. Finding there's too much choice around with IPS panels & GSync etc.

Could someone please explain what is a waste of time & what's not?

I sit quite close to my monitor so generally thinking refresh > resolution (144hz/1080) as it's smoother & lower res saves on performance vs 4K.

Does anyone have any recommendations with regards to what's on the market right now? I don't need any unnecessary extras like speakers or fancy stands, just the raw functions like quality screen & response rate etc

Could wait for the Asus pg278q. Supports 2550x1440 res at 120hz. Pretty much the most anticipated monitor right now. Looking at anywhere between 499-699 price range if you can splash out that much.

I want to remain on 1080 so I don't have to buy 7 titans to run future games, & also the fastest refresh rate currently on offer so I have the smoothest experience. This way it keeps the price down too which is a bonus.

I'm also thinking 21.5 inch or 23 inch because 1080 stretched over a 27 inch monitor won't look as good

It depends on what bothers you least trust me. If 60HZ is bugging you like it did me with headaches and detiorating vision then you need to move up to the minimum HZ that makes that go away. Then you can start to talk about colors because i bet we can narrow it down to 3-4 monitors. Most of the choices out there are junk and in my opinion there are about six at most worthy of consideration for the average joe.

So if 75HZ is enough your options open up into the world of great colors and Ultrawide Asus MX299Q or AOC 2963PM. If this is not enough and you want 120hz then your choices really nosedive especially if you value proper greens and grass in games or dislike green/blue tints in the whites of clouds. You might end up looking at the Asus ROG 1440p GSYNC against the Eizo FG 2421. And if motion blur bothered you as much as it did smoothness then your choice would probably come down to the Eizo which sounds like your ideal monitor as long as you can put up with slightly off colours.

And wait forrreeeevvvveeeerrrrr...

Personally I'd take 60Hz 2560x IPS colours over 120Hz 1920x yukky TN. I can OC my Dells to 75Hz and it does make a difference.

The ASUS - should it ever come out - is the happy balance

It's also about input lag with monitors. Make sure you check out TFTCentral

You won't need anywhere near that. 1 780ti with some overclocking will be enough.

2560x1440 is nearly 1.8X the pixels of 1920x1080. Add to that the fact that AA gets more taxing at higher res, and a 780ti is going to struggle mightily with a lot of the poorly optimised console ports. Depends what you're playing, though. Also, remember that his card 'only' has 3GB of memory ... plenty of badly optmised titles want more than 3GB at 2560x1440. This resolution is a lot more demanding.

If he's happy with 1920x1080, then I'd recommend any of the PWM-free 1920x1080 144hz monitors. I think Iiyama's latest one is PWM-free, and all of BenQ's recent ones are. If you can win the figurative lottery and get a good Eizo FG2421 unit, then overall it's the best out there ... but you'd be very lucky to get a good unit, I think.

I thought AA at 1440p wasn't as paramount. Most anecdotal articles I have read say that most people don't notice the difference with it off?

for fast paced / competitive gaming, refresh rate is king.

for slow paced gaming / movies / everything else, image quality is probably more important.

resolution: get as high as u can afford, keep in mind you will need to drop like a grand on a gpu for a 4k monitor.
