On the apple website there are lots of machines which have been refurbished and priced to reflect this.

Where to apple get these from? Are they ex-display units, or ones recovered from lease contracts e.g. universities etc?

I ask because I want to change my MBP for a MBA in about 4 weeks when my apple care runs out (machine is two years old and I fancy treating myself) - would apple part ex. this for me or am I looking at trying to sneak a private sale past Feek on here ;) ?

Old display units. Returns that have been faulty and repaired. All my own Apple gear is refurb units. Except my iphone. But that's only because they don't sell refurb'd iPhones. If they did, it would be a refurb.

Apple do a recycling program, but you'd make more money selling the MBP. You should have enough posts to access the members market now if you want to sell it in there.

Just to reiterate what Brian said, though more often than not they are returned units that were faulty and have been repaired rather than being old display units.

There's nothing wrong with them and you still get the same great support you would have gotten if you bought new.

On a related note, the new Airs are great little machines.

Any idea why Apple don't do refurbed iPhones? I'd love to get a 3GS as a beater phone for international travel, but do't want to pay £250 really.

i was looking at an Imac today and was wondering the difference in getting a refurb or new ,the site had a sweet looking 27inch I7 which would be just in the budget i had set !
Are the warranties the same ie applecare etc ?

Thank you

If I didn't get discount from Apple I'd look a the refurb kit. I've not heard of anyone who got anything less than a pristine machine.

They seem to do refurb iPads, so it's a shame they don't do refurb iPhones...

I've got a feeling they're old stock. They were selling original iPads at a significant discount for a while after the iPad 2 launched. It was ... un-apple like. They're usually very tight with stock control when a new product launches.

They do make em Im sure the Iphone I got back from apple care was a refurb, But I dont think they sell them.

It's not refurbished, it's remanufactured.

So it's not so much an old phone that's been spruced up to look like new, it's a new device made with some bits that are effectively recycled. Logic boards etc.

The 'it's not refurbished it's remanufactured' bit obviously smells like bull**** when you first hear it but it is true and it does make perfect sense both environmentally and business-wise.

It's a green/money saving exercise in one - obviously apple like the money saving bit and like showing off about the green bit.

A huge amount of service parts - replacement phones, replacement parts for machines fixed under warranty - are remanufactured. Any warranty repair you have done on your mac, the old bit will go back to Apple and be remanufactured and end up in someone else's Mac if it's at all possible.

I'm all for it personally.

They do, but only as replacements to faulty ones.

Faulty iPhones don't get repaired like Macs do - they get replaced.

Yes they do, you take yours in for repair, they give you a refurbished replacement. Yours is then sent of and fixed/refurbished for the next person who has an issue a few weeks later. :)

No need to try and be clever. That's what I meant - they get remanufacturered and used as warranty replacements, not sold on at a discount.

Sorry for being the nay-sayer but quite often the saving is peanuts - like £10 for a refurb. There was loads of stuff on like that last night.

^^^^
Although in saying that there is some good stuff on at the moment. But no iMacs. The Imacs that were on last night were only a few quid less than the cost of new....
