Reg cleaning and startup tweaking - How safe is Regseeker?

I've downloaded regseeker and told it to scan the registry of my PC and it's found over 2,100 entries. My OS build is a couple of years old. How good is regseeker? How easy it is to restore things it backs up?

Also, I seem to remember a program which examines all startup entries and has a database of what things are, giving a list of what's good to remove. It did the same for running processes IIRC. Anyone know what it could be?

K.

Extremely safe, I've been using it on all my machines for years now and its one of my essential tools I can't live without. It stores backups as a .reg file, so to restore it I guess it'd be a simple matter of double clicking the reg file to restore the entries back into the registry.

I think the second prog you refer to is called Hijackthis or something like that.

Yups, been doing full reg scans with it every 3 weeks for many years now. Once the scan is done, I just select all, right click and hit delete (both green&red entries). Not once ever needed to restore a backup either. It does miss some entries though, so I go back into the registry and manually remove any orphaned application keys etc.

I gave RegSeeker a go and it found loads of stuff which I nervously deleted. When I restarted the PC there was a problem with the ATI CCC and it said I didn't have 'admin rights to perform the action' or something and I kept getting this message whenever I started the PC.

I restored the registry from the backups but the problem was still there. I uninstalled and reinstalled ATI CCC, but still no luck.

I looked into it and found that it was a common problem but the fixes for it didn't work (for me anyway).

The only thing left to do was to completely retore my PC using Ghost.

Needless to say, I haven't touched RegSeeker since.

When i used regseeker it left a massive gap in the screen showing what progs i had installed.
When i used a defrag prog my Hard drive wouldn't boot up properly and eventually died.
Needless to say i am Very cautious when using any software.

What ever you do back everything up and stick it on a Disc before you do anything.
Strip out all the crap then set a system restore then try these other progs.
At least then you have a chance of full recovery when things go wrong.
Notice i say When things go wrong not if.

Only problem I've found is that RegSeeker seemed to enjoy removing the settings for 7-Zip. If you are paranoid about using it then just backup the items using the RegSeeker options and/or delete the green items only.

Security Task Manager will examine startup entries. There is also a list of entries here :

Spybot Search & Destroy has this feature under tools if run in advanced mode.
