I know, but the point is, neither is really worth ruthless enforcement. Someone using a fancy font on their plate is technically against the rules, but as long as it can be read, then I doubt the police (in your case) will go out of their way to do something about it. Evidently I guess it doesn't actually bother you that much, or you would have walked through the door of the police station and told them to look out the window at said car.
I see similar around my way - logos, funny fonts, odd spacing on plates is quite common, but in general, still legible, so presumably, the police aren't really bothered about it. I imagine they might be more worried about strategically placed screw caps and the like, as they can actually make the characters appear differently.
So you have 8.25mm around the lettering then Perhaps you haven't been stopped because although your plate is 75% of the proper size, oncoming police just think your car is further away than it is
