Regarding my OCZ SSD

Hey guys,

I recently purchased an OCZ Agility 3 SSD (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-076-OC&groupid=701&catid=2104&subcat=1427), and I was wondering if my write/read speeds are correct;

Note: I have it connected to SATA2, which might explain the ~266mb write/read?

The SATA3 on my motherboard is controlled by a Marvell 9128 controller - I have read many bad things about Marvell, and some suggested that using an Intel SATA2 would have a better performance.

Any advice/help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advanced.

EDIT: Also, WEI reports my disk data transfer rate to still be 5.9. I read that this may be because Windows is reporting my 1TB hard drive, and not my SSD. Any ideas on this?

Basing my results with http://www.ocztechnology.com/res/manuals/OCZ_Agility3_Product_sheet.pdf , I suppose there are no problems. Would switching to Marvell give a noticeable difference?

Considering SATA 2 theoretically offers a maximum bandwidth of 300 MB/s you're not that far off :P

What happens when you put it into the SATA 3 port? Seems silly to by a sata 3 ssd and then run it through a sata 2 port :D

I have yet to try the SATA 3 port as nearly, if not all, the posts I have read about the Marvell controller state that it has performance issues; and that it is better off to use a SATA 2.

Yeah, it was silly of me to not check which SATA 3 controller I had before hand...but hey, future motherboard upgrade is possible :)

Same, as I believe the sata 3 ports on my motherboard are marvel controlled, but I only have a sata 2 SSD, qq.

Worth installing the marvel drivers and giving it a go tho, you never know!

275-280MB/s is about the maximum you'll see from a SATA 2 port after overheads etc.
Duely noted :)

This seems relatively slow...am I missing something? (This was tested with the SATA 2 port, I have yet to test with the Marvell SATA 3)

Crippling a SATA 3 device by attaching to SATA 2 and showing us screenies will prove nowt other than your crippling a great drive,,,, sorry :(

First port of call for you bruv should be the OCZ forums and get advice direct from OCZ forum members and support staff who attend daily. Everything from initial set-up to controllers and updates :)

the latest firmware is 2.15 ... so your already behind

link here straight to the Vertex3 section

I have an older gen 1 drive and it still licks along nicely just by following the advice straight from the manufactuer :)

Hi Mate,

Your getting faster results than my OCZ Agility 3 60Gb SSD and im using SATA 3 ports, i havent got a clue why mine is running slow either!

Is the SSD in ACHI mode?

Thanks

Yes, I have it set to ACHI mode. Have you tried this; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976 ?

I changed my SSD to the SATA 3 Marvell and these are my results;

Granted that I have also read Marvell would only have a maximum write/read speed of 250mb/400mb, I assume there appears to be nothing wrong with my SSD (I think).

According to many, TRIM is not supported on the Marvell 9128. With that being said, I assume it would be somewhat better to use the ICH10R controller instead of the Marvell to increase lifespan of my SSD?

Do note that AS SSD uses incompressible data for its testing so the results will always be lower. ATTO is better to gauge the manufacturer's rated figures as they market the compressed data rates instead of non compressed.

Use both though.
