Ok, want to wipe all the rubbish codecs from my HTPC and start over.

Using the onboard sound to output sound via SPDIF if that makes any difference and to upscale dvd's / avi's

Just wanted to be sure can i just install FFDshow and that's it ?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

Nothing else needed ? what about nvida decoder ? avisync ? dscaler ? reclock ?

just a few i already have on my pc !

Thanks

do i need an audio codec to go with it ?

No, different audio codecs are included in FFDShow, as you run the setup you will see the different audio (and video) options that can be set. :)

FFDSHOW will do pretty much everything, I have a HTPC and rarely need to add another codec.

Since you're using SPDIF out make sure you select SPDIF for AC-3 and DTS in audio video codecs. Don't forget to use ffdshow scaling. If something doesn't work use gspot to determine what audio/video codec it uses than install that individually. I posted a few pictures of ffdshow, do a search on my username. Have pictures on the scaling options too.
