I'm going to be doing a fresh install of OSX on my iMac soon. It's being backed up using TimeMachine but I dont want to restore the whole system from that, I'm looking to just have a fresh install and then restore the data.

I'm using Thunderbird for email and have tested the restore of the email profile / data, but are there any other things I can do prior to the rebuild?

Didn't have any issues going from SL to Lion doing a fresh install then using my Time Machine backup to restore applications, emails, everything.

If you're worried do a clone to another drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.

Ah, sounds promising then.

I've been playing around with exporting ThunderBird profiles and have got my mail moved over to a Win7 Laptop, so I'm happy that I can recover my mail that way if a problem happens.
