My hard drive has become corrupted. I had to reinstall vista yesterday as it didnt boot up. Even safe mode froze on crcdisk.sys. I reinstalled yesterday, and the same thing has happened today. I didn't reformat before the last reinstall, and its suffered a LOT of BSODS recently due to overlcok failures.

Do I need to reformat the disk? If so, how can I do this with the windows vista install cd? Or do I have to take it out and stick it in another pc?

Cheers lads.

try your system with only one stick of ram in
if you want to format your hdd use your vista cd, when it gets to the point were you have to choose which hdd to install on click advanced options and then a few options will appear and one of them is format

Nah, doesn't want to know. Just after the last BSOD, the contiguity disk checker thingy ran. I took the HDD out, and stuck it via usb into another pc. I found bootex.txt on the C: drive. This is what it says:

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.

Windows has finished checking your disk.
Please wait while your computer restarts.

Think it would be OK if I just reformatted it from this pc via a USB connection? Or use the vista install cd?

Yeah mate just nuke it from the other PC then fresh install.

Id install the bare minimum/programs you use all the time and image it tbh, saved me a LOT of hassle multiple times both with my own PCs and building for others.

I would recommend Acronis, dirt cheap for the amount of times its saved me from hours of reinstallin bits and pieces

Yeah, just splashed out for Acronis today. Forgive me for sounding dumb, but what is the best way to "nuke" it from this pc to make sure it'll be nice and clean for a fresh install?

just a format mate, I'd do a full format tho if you've had issues with the disc just to be safe.

Right click my computer > manage > disc management

Would be faster formatting if you connected it up via IDE/sata than USB tho, I'd recommend that way.

of course once youve got the disc back up and running my normal approach is...

Windows, Chipset Drivers, Windows SP/updates, invaluable programs, office/DVD burning/Media players n such, Winrar and other utils.

I run ccleaner and perfectdisc after every few installs just to make sure, once all the bare basics are done run a full defrag with data placement *smart placement I think perfectdisc calls it) then pop in acronis and get yer image made. Its relatively fast too for the amount it stores so dont be afraid to up the compression in the advanced settings. I normally manage to get an XP image/install onto a single DVD using the medium compression on acronis, last was 3.7Gb iirc.

One other thing,
If you split yer main driver Windows/Games/Storeage as most people seem to do now, another quick trick to get ye up and running as fast as possible after a windows corruption/issue is to remap all your folders such as my docs/music and outlook folders to a seperate drive. That way when you run the image you can be rest assured everything is where it should be and you've lost (hopefully) minimal amount of data from the issue.

One thing I missed on my last one was all my email message rules TT wasn't fun lol

Cheers mate. I don't think I can open up this Dell pc to get the HDD in. Still under warranty. I'll just have to use USB. :D

I can't reformat it on this pc! I click on format, and it says "you do not have sufficient rights to perform this action". What do I do? I'm running an Administrator account on this pc now...

EDit- I think I got it going. The disk management utility says the drive type is RAW. Lucky I just copied my work over.
