Reinstall Windows on SSD? Keep data on HDD?

Hi Guys,

So i'm thinking of getting an SSD (maybe a 64GB one) just for the OS and one or two regularly used programmes, and keeping my current HDD for everything else. If I boot from the Windows 7 disc, install windows to the SSD, then reboot my PC to the HDD and delete the "Windows" folder, would that be OK? or is not as simple as that? I think i've overcomplicated the process in my head from seeing the many different ways people do it, and now i'm a bit confused which process is best. Thanks!

Your PC will only boot from one HDD, as long as you stick the SSD above the HDD in the bios boot order you'll be fine. You won't even need to delete the old Windows folder on the HDD.

Unplug the HDD while installing Windows onto the SSD though just to be on the safe side.

Cool thanks. So Windows will just ignore the HDD's Windows install, right? And all my games and programmes on the HDD will still be ok to use? (sorry for noobish question)

If you're talking about the programs that were installed to the HDD, then they most likely wont work. They'll install stuff to the registry which will no longer be there. Some programs will still work however.

Thanks for reply. I ideally wanted to avoid having to reinstall all my programmes, especially my steam games, that would literally take weeks to download them all on my internet connection. Is there a way around that, or is reinstalling just the best/cleanest way to do it (my guess is that there isn't)?

Make sure you buy a Large SSD. I got a 128GB SSD but with the STUPID Microrubbish Updates it is rapidly filling up. No one ever mentions the Updates, and how quickly they fill up your HDD..
