Reinstalling Ubuntu. Can I keep settings?

Well I did a format and installed Mint. It's running SO MUCH better than Ubuntu.

Things like scrolling down in firefox is much smoother. Compiz is working better.

However some things about Mint are bugging me. In firefox when I search with the google toolbar, the search page is branded with Mint and some massive google ads. No thank you please.

Also I have installed Vista. grubs obviously gone. rebuilt it, but it's not found vista. Is there not a easy way of reinstalling the grub like it did when I installed Mint?

I try grub-install but I think I am missing something.

Been considering Mint for a while.

I use My Ataris very seriously, and I use MiNT on that... Now, the MiNT I use on the Atari I have used for years and years and it first came about 20 or so years ago, so I seriously doubt they are connected in anyway, however, MiNT on the Atari, gives the Atari Linux-esque powers such as access to the Filesystems ( fatxx, ext2, resier, minix blah blah ) and networking and also multiple user logins etc, and hell it even gives the atari the ability to run both Atari software and Linux software... Well, basic X apps anyway, not everything of course.

So, I have been thinking of Mint. I been reading up in Linux format about mint and it says its quicker than ubuntu there too! - funkily enough, I am currently using Kubuntu on my LapTop as thats the fastest version of ubuntu I have found so far, its even faster than xubuntu ffs on my laptop and that I cannot work out why, given that kde is supposed to be so bloated, its certainly the fastest version I have found to date.

So, honest opinion on mint?

It like a more easy to use Ubuntu really. There are a lot of small Mint apps that allow you to do do things with tick boxes rather than having to mess around in ubuntu. Things like what Icons I want to show on the desktop.

A lot of the crap which I don't need isn't there. Like games.

Lots of things are already installed for me like Thunderbird & Envy.

I like it. It's what Ubuntu should be for me. It's the small touches that make a big difference.

Well, I have installed it onto my Lappy...

My first impression of it, are not too positive I have to admit.
It feels fairly snappy, but also I must add that I am NOT a gnome fan.
I have tried and failed to install the KDE junk, so perhaps I should have gone for the KDE Version I dont know? - I also love the hell out of OpenGEU which is based on Enlightenment and the funny thing is that is so bloody slow compared to KD Ebut I love the fact that it looks nothing like any Windows PC and this gives it such a better geekiness feel to it.

Anyway, I will give it its due, Iwont judge too harshly just yet and see where I am on it in a few more days...
