Hi all,

Just ordered a new laptop and it looks like it will be full of the standard junk. I'm considering formatting it, but I only have a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium that I used on my desktop. The laptop comes with a licence for Windows 7 Business. Am I right in thinking I can simply use that disk along with the Serial Number which should be attached to the laptop somewhere to reinstall Windows Business edition?

Cheers,
James

Probably not as the laptop copy will have a SLIC 2.1 in the Windows 7 which will match the bios SLIC 2.1
However it is relatively easy to make a copy of windows 7 and insert the Slic 2.1 applicable to your manufacturer - HP Asus Dell or whatever. What make is the laptop? I have not heard of Windows 7 Business?

I've never heard of this SLIC thing either. I can tell you that with my Dell Studio 15 I was sent a Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit upgrade from dell. I used my purchased Windows 7 Home Premium 64 disc to install using the serial that came with the upgrade disc. It installed and activated without any problems.

You should be fine! I done the same with my Acer laptop and all was fine. You might need to call Microsoft to activate. Just make sure you image your current set up so you can revert back should anything go wrong. Also if your cd is Home Premium and your licence is Professional you will need to make an imagr of your installation disk and remove the ei.cfg file so you can select to install professional instead of Home Premium.

I have used a generic Vista on a Fujitsu and that went on ok however I had to activate on line.
Easier and More fun to have a Tosh Disk. Is that 32 or 64 bit you are using?

Its is 64 bit. I think for the moment I can make do with it how it is.

Just another couple of questions. Is there any way of getting rid of the annoying branded Toshiba logon screen? I just want the normal Windows 7 one.

Also, the recovery partition takes up half the drive. Can I safely resize it?

I would back it up as mentioned below before touching it.

You're much better off doing the following:
1) Use the Toshiba software to backup the recovery partition to DVD.
2) Image your current installation to an external hard disk
3) Wipe and reinstall using your W7 64-Bit disk and the serial key on COA. As previously mentioned you'll need to remake your DVD image so you can remove the EI.CFG file. Removing this file allows you to select which version of Windows 7 to install from the DVD :).

You're better off just getting it done :).

Use the backup software built into Windows 7 :). There's an option to image your hard drive to an external device. There should be some Toshiba supplied software that will let you create backup DVDs so you can put your PC back to factory set-up. You're completely covered this way.
