Me and the mrs have been talking recently about moving out to mallorca. We have been there quite a few times and we both really like the island. So we have looked up the possibility of moving out there permantly. We have cash saved along with about £50k in equity from our house. I was just wondering if anybody here has thought about doing something similar or has done and could share there thoughts on the subject.

Cheers in advance for you help, info ;)

How old are you both? Is this retirement, or are you looking to work out there?
Are your language skills up to it?

We are both looking to work out there. We are a family with 2 young children.

My mrs can speak spanish pretty well and i know the basics.

Also can anybody recommend any good websites, i have tried google and have found a few but they only contain basic information.

I know a couple who moved to Malaga with their 3 children, but it turned out not to be what they expected and they moved back to the UK after 7 months out there. Caused a lot of upheaval with the children because on return to the UK they had difficulty going back into schools in the correct years for their ages.

I'm sure you've both thought about it very carefully and done your homework, but I'm always thinking, the grass isn't actually greener on the otherside when you actually have to live there, just nice for holidays!

How old were there children?

Mine are 3 and 7 so they have only just really started in school. So if we did move they they should (i hope) adapt well.

We are still in the process of doing all of our "homework" and looking at the pros and cons etc etc to moving but we are still undecided. ;)

If you want to move somewhere - can't you find somewhere a little more interesting? Mallorca probably has more English people in football shirts than Liverpool and Manchester combined.

In any part of Spain, it will be very hard to find work if you are not Fluent in Spanish. Also in the tourisrt areas its quite hard to find work anyway.

The wife and I have been considering relocating abroad, but further afield than yourself.

We have been reading through the following website, and the community forum there is pretty good and full of people going through the process for emigrating or like yourself considering it.

It also has people who have done it, and are offering their advice and support to this interested. I would highly recommend you taking a look.

Thanks for the website. will have a look now ;)

I have used that website myself and it is one of the best.

I am also considering one of the Spanish Islands or the US / Aus for retirement.

And just on a side pointer..... my parents retired to Ireland (and lots of people tried to talk them out of it / said they were mad etc)

Now almost 20 years on - My parents always said it was the best move they ever made - the same people they left regret not leaving Slough,as most of them are paying too much for things. The town they left behind is flooded with immigrants & nothing like what it was & most of their old friends will never have enough money to move.

If you try it - you might regret it - but you have time to revert back.
If you don't try it - you will always be wondering 'what if ' etc.

You could potentially be very happy there.... and from what I can see - children have a far better quality of life in places like Spain (and thats what its all about)

Thanks Divosuk, you are spot on tbh on our last trip out we had an awesome time and my children loved it and the country itself is very laid back, relaxed etc and then we came back to this lovely wet big brother, police state. The only worry or drawback at the mo is finding/getting a job, which im hoping will be ok as im an IT specialist, but still doing a lot of investigation at the mo. One of the main reasons of moving would be for my children and quality of life they would get.

Amaru. I would recommend signing up to British Expats and posting on their forums. The people there are very friendly and approachable. They can give you all the advice you could possibly want, and far more than we can here.

Also, there are people who look to recruit through their forums, and also other expats who will pass your details onto their employers. I have known people through the site who have got jobs with other expats who run their own business abroad and only recruit other expats to make the transition easier.
