Remaps...

Just thought I'd post back with how I got on with mine :)

Went to CC Tuning in Burton on Trent for a custom map. Rolling roaded the car on the standard map and my current mods made a nice difference, it ran 221BHP and 216LBFT. Mods in short are 2.75" downpipe/precat decat, 2.5" system from the downpipe back, also decatted. Crossover delete so direct feed to turbo air intake, 200x80x80mm Pipercross air filter. Of course not long serviced, VXR spark plugs etc. So off to a good start.

Then the map went off to be written. Some rolling road runs and checks later we were seeing good figures but the standard side mount intercooler doesn't cope brilliantly. Intake temps were rising along with the power curve! So maybe look into a front mount intercooler as summer approaches. Anyway, we ended up on 260BHP and 270LBFT. Fairly good gains! And all at no more than 15PSI. But we ran it again and the boost dropped off mid run to about 8PSI. All boost hoses, vac pipes checked by eye, no issues. Smoke test was then done, no leaks. Map was re-checked, all fine. So off we went to test on the road and log any issues, but again none showed up on diagnostics and no fault codes have come up. So we think the boost control solenoid is iffy. Occasionally in higher gears the boost will tail off then pick back up. Only £28 for a new one so will fit this weekend coming.

Graph, you can see a boost drop (black line) on here too. Not too much of a boost spike as it spools so my clutch lasts:

Nice gains! You get solenoid changed?

Does it feel much faster when driving?

Mine is booked in for 9am Saturday morning, Alfatune are opening up just for me as they don't normally open Saturday due to race meeting etc.

I've got a new one delivered today so fitting on Saturday, couple of small issues to sort as it's hunting a bit at tickover so gonna clean the throttle body out too.

If you put your toe down it's most definitely quicker and pulls harder when on song, boost sort of comes in fully a bit higher than the standard map (around 3200rpm opposed to about 2700) but it pulls very strongly I have to say, for an Astra it has already embarrased some quick motors this week :) Even though max torque is higher the turbo always seems to be spooling, it just comes in hard @ just over 3k and flies for what it is then!

Saturday should be an exciting day for you then mate, more power is always a nice thing :) Look forward to see how you find it once you've had it done!

I know, I expect the clutch to go first so will put a VXR dual mass flywheel and clutch in and the M32 gearboxes are shocking so it's only a matter of time before that needs a rebuild. Sometimes it's better not to mess :P

The standard brakes are not very good haha. Had it mapped this morning, its made such a difference its untrue. Advised not to floor it in high gear/low revs (suppose that's obvious really) 2nd gear foot down from 2.5k will pull all the up too the speed limit with no sign of stopping ;).

It picks up so much faster I could get into trouble pretty quickly!

Need to look for some brake upgrades now!

Sounds good mate, I've found the same, you end up giving it less grief so they do actually end up better on juice haha! Mines gotta pop back in next fri for a couple of tweaks based on stuff I've noticed but no cost to me so all good.

Sounds like it's made a healthy difference on your car then! What estimate should you have for power and torque now? :)

Nice gains there! I run 266bhp at wastegate pressure which is bang on 15psi, then I can flick the boost solenoid on and that takes it to around 23psi, giving 354bhp.. now that's fun in a '96 Astra, and sure as hell shocks a few people!

And on the subject of the clutch, I already run an uprated pressure plate but it's barely hanging on, I need to go paddle clutch eventually :(

Yeah not flooring too early is to save clutch/driveshaft/transmission.

He said his 159 has been mapped from day one and is on 100k with original clutch!

Basically said just load the torque before just giving it full throttle from low rpm - Makes perfect sense if you think about it.

Power estimates based on others with Alfatune maps are around 180bhp and 300lbs I think. Although he makes no power claims its more about the drivability.
