Hi everyone,

I just wanted to remind you guys/girls to backup your files. You think it's not going to happen but it will. Live and learn, I guess.

My IDE Hitachi started to act weird fifteen minutes ago. I kept getting files and folders as corrupt and thought hmmm. I restarted and double clicked the drive and it stated it wasn't formatted and if I wanted to format it.

Great, all my movies, music, uni work, photos and everything else that should have been backed up...gone. I'm not going to format it though yet as there seems to be a lot of people complaining about data corruption on nForce4 motherboards so fingers crossed.

:(

actually i hardly backup anything unless i need to reformat. all my stuff is spread across different drivers and partitions, so if one goes down i wont lose much. Oh plus im too lazy to do backups :)

It's never happened to me but I assume it will do one day (partly thanks to all the threads like this one ;)), which is why I do back up regularly.

Seconded.
Back up NOW.
My HD died a while back and although i keep no important files and lost nothing of importance getting your system back to where it was is a complete nightmare.
Back up everything and do it NOW.
Searching around trying to remember all the installs done my box in and to be totally honest it was a mate that finally remembered the last few things. Totally frustrating and all just to get your system back to where it was before the disaster.

Walks off to hit something.

I'm really paranoid about this kind of thing... which is why while I'm doing my Uni Final year project every hour or so I save onto both the laptop and a USB memory stick, then at the end of the day I also put a copy on my desktop and upload to my webspace (just in case the house were to burn down!!)

Most of my other stuff isn't important and could be replaced so I don't make much of an effort with anything else, just backup my documents folder to DVD every few weeks.

Ha, usb sticks, I had my dissertation on about 15 different floppies. Some kept in the lab, some for ready use, some kept safe in my room. Was no fun when the uni AV software failed and they *all* got infected with a Word Macro virus. :(

The only thing I backup is my Music. I've nothing else I particularly care about. Perhaps some of my old Uni work like my dissertation, but that's all worthless now anyway :)

I go by the theory that, if I can't remember what the program was, or if I don't miss it, it clearly isn't of great importance.

Thanks for the help guys.

Still managing to laugh looking at the unopened 25 pack of Verbatim DVD-Rs I have next to my monitor.

I've got a 160Gb Seagate drive in it's death throes, it's currently on my desk "resting"

I'll check out those recovery things (fingers crossed), thanks guys.

I'm trying to do that now. I have a vague idea of the folder structure on the drive. It was something like this...

Brother
Sister
Mine
Movies
Music
Photos

Brother's and sister's folder didn't have anything important and movies and music isn't really important compared to the uni work (luckily nothing current) and other personal stuff in my folder. Oh, photos is, I mean was important. Just trying to remember what was in my folder.

The SATA Hitachi was meant to be my backup but I left the OS installed on it when I bought the WD Raptor. I figured if the Raptor died, I could just plug in the Hitachi and off I go again.

I don't ususally keep anything I can't afford to lose on my PC - I'm only using one of my Raptors at the moment, although ...

Last Tuesday I got my new motherboard and did a reformat, was really keen to get overclocking.

I remembered on Friday that I had been playing Neverwinter Nights (I had a game voucher and it was cheap) so have lost my save game. :(

Don't know if I can be bothered to start again, don't really play that many games.

I have thought for ages that I should do a fresh install, set everything up and then create an image, I have never got around to it though.

It's all the little tweaks and settings and combination of drivers that give me exceptional performance for the hardware i use. Remembering all these is vital to getting back to how it was. What i now do is make a fresh recovery disc regularly bringing it up to current state. Progs i don't care about as you say most are forgotten for good reason.

This is a very good subject to bring up!

I know people in work who have lost everything because they didn't bother to backup and when their hard drive failed, it meant that they have had to reinstall Windows and all their programs, applications and drivers which can take many hours

I make a backup every fortnight using Drive Image 7 and it isn't that much of a hassle as it has saved my bacon on a few occasions and is well worth the half hour or so that is required.

I lost my drive recently - and it was an 80Gb just full of photos!
I felt like crying - MP3s can be re-ripped, programs can be re-installed, even work can be re-done, but my photos...
I lost every photo from the last 3 years of my life. :(
I backup now.

yeah this time last year, my computer decided it would corrupt one of the windows start up files randomly, and then it just wouldnt even let me repair that

thing is because i had no warning signs i did the stupid thing of not backing up, lost over 20gb of music, which isnt to bad as it only meant ripping all my cd's again, but that takes ages. All my uni work, all my c++ projects that i was doing in my spare time, all my saved games but worst of all, and this almost made me cry, i lost all my digital photos including my avril lavigne (something tells me people are gonna see avril and forget everything i just typed and laugh at me :p) concert photos which had been taken the week before

gutted

so after that i brought a 300gig external hard drive, and been ok since :)
