hi i currently have a router (linksys, the router has wireless capabilites but i dont use it i use wired) and currently all i use it for is internet sharing and file sharing but i would like to to have a login where i can login to either computer (e.g comp upstaris log into comp down stairs) like remote access (like you have at schools) and i am pretty sure you need a programme to do it and i was wondering where you can get one from???
thanks in advance for any help :D

UltraVNC is free and easy to use. As in RealVNC.

google the names and ull get the sites.

I use UltraVNC at home but RealVNC at wrk, i wudnt say one is overly better than the other but it depends on what all you want to do while in remote

XP can do remote desktop, it comes as part of XP.

Account you're logging into must have a password.

Example:

Comp 1:
Users: Mary - Bob
Computer Name: T1

Comp 2:
Users: You

Start menu > All programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection

Type in the computer name for the PC you want to login to. So using the example this would be T1. Now click the options button and you can add the username and password for the account on Comp 1 that you want to login into.

So lets say for now, Mary doesnt have a password, but Bob's password is 'pizza'. Since remote desktop requires a password for logining in remotely, only Bob is available.

Its pretty much as simple as that, if it requires a domain, just put the computer name as the domain.

To setup a computer's name, Right click on My Computer, click on properties, then go the computer name tab... :D

Used this method for 2nd PC up till when i sold it. Never had a problem logging in from the other household PC's using the same method.

This method will work assuming you have the PC's correctly communicating on the network, ie they see each other.

Used it loads of times, easy and brill lil program.

RDP is good over the net also and comes with XP, would need to open port 3389 on your router, off the top of my head think VNC is 5900. Make sure if doing either to use secure passwords on your user accounts and if possible, limit access to certain IP addresses. :)

Edited to add logmein is another way over the net, or VPN if equipment allows
