Remote desktop. Change resolution of local machine MSTSC

Hi I have lots of PCs that I just deployed to configure. Now I can do all of this it seems remotely. Except the resolution of the monitors!

I need to change the resolution of the machines locally but it seems I only only set the resolution of my remote desktop session.

Is there anyway to do it? (OS is Windows XP)

You'd need something like VNC which has a local client installed (gives you like a console access rather than a remote access) to change the resolution remotely.

Or change the setting in the registry.

Where in the registry do I change that setting? That would be good as I am sure it would take effect after a remote reboot.

I have to admit I have never ever tried it, nor know if the setting will stick but have you tried connecting to the console?

Ignore me, just read up on it, and apparently you can't do it.

Never tried it either, would give it a go but means I'd have to get the lappy out as I don't have VPN to work.

save the mstsc to desktop, right click on it then edit

Misunderstood the OPs requirement

He needs to set the resolution that will appear locally on the system, not the one presented over RDP.

Test one system to see if Windows will automatically set the optimal resolution for the monitor that is attached once a real user logs on. Sometimes you don't actually need to make work for your self.

There is a small application than can set the res called nircmd you can do it from the command line with start up scripts. I noticed when deploying windows 7 some pcs will default to 1024x768 even though the monitor drivers were in the sysprep image.
