Hi,

Is it possible to remote desktop to a windows xp pro machine that is in either sleep or hibernate mode?

If not... what's the best approach for saving power... powerdown harddisk's and monitor after 30 mins etc.

Finally is it possible to wake-on-lan a pc straight from a router? (mines a USR)... as i dont have another pc etc from which i could WOL it from.

Cheers

you can use WOL over the internet if that is what you mean?

Hibernation will only come out of with WOL as thats just shuts down, but remembers the current system state

ok cheers... can you give me a pointer into how to do WOL over the internet? do i need any specific router etc. Also im on dynamic ip, using no-ip.com for a fixed address tho.

Very basically you just need to set your Bios to accept WOL, and then use a piece of software to send the 'magic packet.' Wiki gives a reasonable explanation of the process and links to a few bits of software that will do what you want.

To answer your original question, no Remote Desktop (Terminal Services) can not talk directly to hardware or bring a machine out of hibernation mode.

WOL = Wake-On-LAN is needed for this, however your hardware (Motherboard) needs to support this. It works using MAC addresses for centralised control as TCP/IP isn't loaded when the machine is off.

The link above is the one i was going to give you. I use similar features in fork over our LAN/WAN on IBM X series servers, but it has an RSA card. It's quite amazing, as i can see the server remotely on my screen whilst it is in BIOS, reset it, update firmwares, etc. Saves trips to Ireland! :p
