does any one know of a good remote desktop application that will work even through a router.

im after one i can use so if i leave my pc on at home and end up stopping at my girlfriends as a change of plan, i can acces it my pc from her house using either her pc or her laptop and either shut it down or do what ever i need to on the pc.

oh a little info i may need to give is i have a router and a switch plugged into it. i know the switch wont make much difference. but the router might. i have set my pc to dmz at the moment as im looking for a good local firewall that wont affect my connection too much. i have tried zone alarm but that crashed my pc and i had to do a system restore to fix it.

so i basically need a good firewall program and a good remote desktop program

do u have a static ip addy ? cos you'll need that in order to log on to your pc
xp's own remote desktop is pretty handy altho ive never tried it across internet
have been playing around with a SSL remote connection at work but its very difficult to setup
will get more info on this tomorrow

dont think dmz is affected by static or dynamic ip im curious as to why u have your pc in the dmz ?

however ill get this info on SSL connection tomorrow and post up details from what i can tell its totally secure (or at least its as secure as your OS allows :) )

Windows own RDP is doable over the internet, 3889 is the port you need to forward IIRC.

Ultr@VNC can be used too, and you can choose whichever port you want on it.

reason my pc is on dmz is because i was always having problems with webcam, and voice over the internet when i have the firewall set up on the router with my pc blocked. hence the reason i want to get a localized firewall so i can set it up with ease on my pc and allow and disallow things at the click of a buton. hence why i tied zone alarm which decided to bsod my pc on install 1st time. then when i un-installed it to check see if it was affecting my gameplay. i restarted my pc. it got to the desktop wallpaper but wouldnt load anything up like the taskbar and the desktop icons etc.

yeah i have a static ip. otherwise the router wouldnt keep my pc as a dmz would it?
Yes, your PC might have a fixed IP but that's not the IP you would try to connect to from the outside world. It's your router's outward facing WAN IP you would connect to, the one assigned to you by your ISP which very likely won't be fixed unless you pay extra for fixed.
