I am looking to be able to remote desktop to a windows based media centre in another room. Is the Microsoft client the best way to do this or is there better third party apps available?

The microsoft client is pretty much identical to the windows version as far as I can tell... Although I am not a power user so probably haven't realised if some of the more esoteric features are missing!
 
Install UltraVNC on the Windows computer.

Then on your Mac (supposing you're running Leopard) while on the Finder select Go > Connect to server..

Then enter in vnc://*ip address of other computer*

The name of the computer should work also. That is how I do it and it works great for me :)

Cheers mate I will try this first if it means I don't have to install anything on my mac. :)
