OK I have vista on my laptop and xp pro on my desktop, I have set up remote desktop and can now control/see my desktop from my laptop!
Question is how do I know what connection it is using? Is it going over the internet or just using my wireless LAN network??
Reason I ask is that I am a bit thick and also I have limited amount of download/upload and don't want to waste it all controlling pc's remotely in my house!

Where is the information on where the connection is being made? Also if it is going over the internet how do I reroute it so it just uses the LAN wireless network through my wireless router??

if you're doing it in your house it's using the INTERNAL network

so doesn't look at the isp

if you did it over your external ip, it'd use a bit of data, but not that much tbh

OK thanks for the help.

Do you know where it shows the fact that it is using the LAN in my house? Is there a window or something that shows what I'm connected to and what connections I'm using??
That would be great.

you just are

you wouldn't be able to connect to it using local names if it was using the net

if you are connecting to a private address range then you are 100% sure it's local as these are not routable over the internet.

I asume your Laptop and PC are connected to the same router/switch so local traffic will never leave the network and will be routed direct to the host.

If you really want to know whats going on then install wireshark or ethereal and capture your network traffic and you will see exactly whats happening....

have a look through the vista sidebar gadgets available
there are several remote destop ones
they show the ip they are connecting to so if it is a 192.168.*.* one you can be confident it is all internal LAN and not not going to an external ip address

I asume your Laptop and PC are connected to the same router/switch so local traffic will never leave the network and will be routed direct to the host.

If you're on the same LAN then the routing algorithm will look for the lowest latency connection which will most certainly not involve your ISP.

Basically, when you connect to the computer via RDP, do you use the IP address i.e 192.168.*.* or are you using something else ie 84.64.*.*?
