Remote Desktop?

Linux is just an operating system, but it depends what you want to do really, in some respects it is easier, and visa versa.

Easier management and integration within a Windows desktop environment?

Heh - At the end of the day, each OS has its own strenghts and weaknesses. There is no "best operating system" - only best operating system for an individual purpose.

EDIT: It also depends on where your own strengths and weaknesses lie.

I'm a Wintel admin at work, whereas a colleague (who uses predominantly Solaris) wouldn't know where to start when it comes to using Windows as he started on *nix and has little experience of using the "easier" windows.

You have to admit, that in a Windows only desktop environment, having Windows servers makes management much easier. How would you go about defining network wide grooup policies etc without it?

I don't deny it at all and am not arguing that point; however - as I stated before, there is no best operating system, only best for purpose.

For an enterprise environment, I would agree that windows does have a big lead over other operating systems. Active Directory really is leaps and bounds ahead of anything "the competitors" have. Although, there are places in the same environment where *nix boxes are preferable (think of all those back end database servers you have...). Windows also has a massive lead with Exchange/Outlook for enterprise environments.

However, that said - an ftp server isn't a desktop computer... it's an ftp server ;)

p.s. it's entirely possible to integrate *nix boxes into AD - including GP - have a look at the products from Centrify

I thought you were arguing a different point. I totally agree that *nix and Windows can coexist quite nicely, in fact a *nix LDAP server can be very useful in addition to AD. My main point is that a Windows desktop environment without a solely *nix infrastructure would be a little crazy.
