hey, i have a windows machine running as a download/storage machine which i remote desktop into now and again. Is the microsoft mac remote desktop tool the only option I have to use? It does my job without any major problems but just wondering if there are any alternatives. The screen response times are deadly slow with the current setup and you have to wait a few seconds until the screen becomes fully visible.

You could install VNC on the server and use one of the many VNC clients out there for it. But Microsoft's RDP stuff is all proprietary, so there's no other clients available as far as I know.

There are a few alternative RDP clients around, the protocol is hardly top secret. CoRD was one, and http://desktopecho.com/tsclientx/ is another. I've never had any slowdown problems with the Microsoft one on OS X though, and I use it regularly. I've certainly never had it take 'several seconds' to show up, even when connected over a relatively slow connection, and over WiFi/LAN it's lightening fast compared to ARD or VNC.

There is a MS Remote Desktop client available for OSX.

Ooops...just realised you've already tried that.

Another +1 for VNC. I tried RMD but I couldn't be bothered fiddling with it. VNC is definatley the way forward from now on.

I don't have a great deal of experience with Macs, but I beleive it is the same situation as trying to run a remote desktop server through XP Home. XP Home cannot create the 'service' needed to be remote desktop'ed' into. This is why remote desktop 'servers' running XP will be the XP version.

This is why we recommend VNC as all you need is the computer name or the IP Address. I use it over my network to install software and check that people are doing what they are supposed to be doing!
