Remote Support Software

Can anyone suggest some free/cheap remote support software for windows? Just needs to allow me to setup emails accounts on a clients computer.

What I have used in the past:

RealVNC - protection in the free version but no encryption

RemoteAnything - password forced to 'trial' in trial version

Go To Assist is also a top service.

If all your clients and you are behind a firewall VNC is great + free. If you are using Vista or Windows 7 use TightVNC works OKish (runs as a application and not a service, so the user will have to logon for it to work)

Not sure of the price but Dameware is pretty good and well supported.

Over the internet I'd recommend Go To Assist

To encrypt your vnc session you can also use something like winscp that will do the encryption between the two machines using public key encryption techniques.

I use both logmein and teamviewer a lot

Teamviewer is the one you want here..

On your machine, download the 'full version'
Install this on your machine, open up Teamveiwer

Get someone clientside to download 'join a session'
When they open the app, get them to tell you the ID and password.

Once you type that in to your application, it'll open the remote control window.

So they don't need to install anything, they just run that app, then you close it when you're done.

They can see what you do, and no need to mess with passwords etc.

Apoligies, but how does this teamviewer work for the client. We currently use Remotus and direct them to an exe download on our site to install. Does TV work the same way?

Edit : Any idea on costs for 2 licences? Just seen costs, bit expensive.

Yes, TV works in the same way. We direct customers to a web page with the Windows & Mac clients on it. They download, give us the ID / password and you're sorted.

We found TV won hands-down on cost once you start looking at the unattended client (eg for servers). The other products we looked at like LMI charged per unattended client. A single channel for LMI Rescue was costing us something like £60/month (without any unattended clients), so our TV Corporate license isn't bad as a one off.
