In trying to do a backup with Paragon backup it said it would need to shut down my computer to do it. I selected 'yes' but when it restarted it had installed its own bootloader. The program has an option to repair the MBR but doesn't include Win7 which I use dual booted with XP. Will using this remove the bootloader I don't want and still allow me to use the original dual bootloader.

Try using a program called easybcd.

If it is anything like a windows bootloader. Try Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings. This will tkae you to System Properties > Advanced > Startup & recovery and remove the loader from there

Seems to be sorted now. Tried shine's suggestion but it did not remove the rogue bootloader. I couldn't find reilly's suggestion as wasn't under startup & recovery. Eventually succeed at the second attempt using easybcd, my first effort only booted to xp, I had to untick automatically assign drive letter and assign the appropriate one.
Thanks to all who replied.
